Canadian government makes it easier for international students to obtain citizenship

The newly elected government of Canada is improving immigration legislation to eliminate controversy. A particularly interesting point was the question of obtaining the citizenship of the country by foreign students. In the old law, the issue of citizenship was long - the residency requirement was increased from three to four years, in addition, it was necessary to have a de facto place of residence.

According to one student newspaper from Toronto, international students spend in Canada about 240 days a year, when the legal required legal stay in the country is only 183 days. And since most of the students are enrolled in a four-year program, they are required to become applicants for citizenship of Canada. However, previous legislation stipulated that the time spent by foreign students during their studies "does not count".

Due to this unfair situation, the new government has promised to simplify the rules and shorten the length of stay for foreign students to obtain citizenship. Thus, the Minister for Migration Affairs stated that he intends to create conditions so that more young foreigners who are constantly studying in Canada could become citizens of the country. He also emphasized that it is foreign students who are the best candidates to become citizens of Canada, as they have a high level of knowledge of socio-cultural and regulatory aspects. The main achievement of the new government in this area will be to reduce the required residency requirement for foreign citizens.

As part of the change in migration policy, it should also be noted that the previous system for obtaining citizenship by foreign students - the Canadian Experience Class, has been changed. A new program, Express Entry, has come into force. Express Entry is now the first step and the Canadian Experience Class is the second when applying for citizenship of Canada.
