The Master of Applied Science (MAppSc) is a 180-point, coursework postgraduate degree. A candidate would normally be a graduate but the degree is also open to those with other relevant qualifications.

The MAppSc is designed for students who wish to pursue an interdisciplinary programme of study underpinned by science that delivers versatile skills relevant to multiple end-users. Optional paths are available that enphasize commercialisation, workplace-based projects or independent study.

The MAppSc can be completed in 12 months or in stages, providing flexibility for recent graduates and those currently employed.

The whole purpose of the Applied Science programme is to provide employer facing skills that will prepare you for an exciting career.

It may be a career that hasn't been devised yet - that's the nature of technology and scientific development at this time in history!

The Applied Science Graduate attributes are:

  • METHODOLOGICAL PROBLEM SOLVING: by applying logic; and acquiring, organising, retrieving, evaluating and presenting information; and the ability to work independently and adapt by acquiring new skills for seeking solutions to unmet needs.
  • INTERDISCIPLINARY CAPABILITY: understand at least two disciplines with the practical capacity to link between disciplines.
  • END-USER FOCUS: Understanding cultural diversity, ethical standards and social and personal responsibility and that the beneficiaries of applied science include: the graduate; consumers; employers; the people of New Zealand and the world.
  • NETWORKING: The ability to communicate and maintain diverse linkages and to lead and effectively operate within a team, to appreciate New Zealand’s contribution to the international environment.
  • EMPLOYABILITY: The attributes of interdisciplinary capability, methodological problem solving, end-user focus and networking—combined with self-confidence, personal responsibility and enterprise, with a commitment to adapt in a changing environment.
  • CLTE 451 Physical Properties of Clothing and Textiles;

  • CLTE 452 Social Aspects of Clothing and Textiles;

  • CLTE 453 Research Methods;

  • CLTE 454 Clothing, Materials and Workplace Injury;

  • Three further approved papers at 400-level;

  • APPS 597 Supervised Independent Study.

Admission to the ProgrammeAdmission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences).Every applicant shall have fulfilled one of the following conditions:be a graduate and have achieved an average grade of at least B in the relevant 300-level papers;have obtained a Postgraduate Certificate or a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Science with an average grade of at least B;have equivalent alternative qualifications or experience acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences).In considering an applicant's qualifications, regard will be had to the detail of the course of study followed to gain the qualification, as well as the applicant's performance in the programme.

University of Otago Coursework Master's Scholarship

The University of Otago Coursework Master's Scholarship provides funding to support course work-based Master's students studying at the University of Otago.

Information

Applicants must be:

- obtaining their first Otago Coursework Master's qualification

- domestic students or international students

- undertaking a papers based thesis*

* Coursework Master’s Scholarships are not available for the papers year of a two-year research Master’s degree.

Selection is based predominantly on academic merit and the applicant’s potential for research.
