Description

This real-world experience feeds directly into the delivery of modules such as ‘Automotive Design’, ‘Vehicle Drive Train and Chassis Systems’ and ‘Automotive Dynamics and Control Systems’.

We encourage our students to undertake a year-long placement between the second and final years, although it is not compulsory. In the past our students have secured paid placements with companies such as Nissan, Jaguar, Vauxhall, Caterham Cars and Tata Steel.

It is striking that 85% of Sunderland’s engineering and technology graduates who are in employment within six months, are in graduate level jobs, according to Unistats in 2012. This shows that there is considerable demand among employers for people with the right mix of skills and experience.

Destinations of our recent graduates include McLaren Automotive, General Motors, Jaguar, Perkins Engines and Parametrics Technology, with graduate pay averaging around £28,000 a year.

  • Work placement (optional)

Final year (national level 6)

A large part of your final year is the individual project. This is your chance to pick a subject area that particularly interests you, and use the skills you’ve learned on the course to research and create a design, or conduct experimental analysis in your chosen area. You’ll have close academic supervision and support, and most students find it an extremely rewarding and enjoyable part of their course.

In your final year you’ll also develop professional skills and knowledge in areas that employers are particularly interested in, such as Project Management and Control and Ethics.

  • Automotive Design (20 Credits)
  • Manufacturing Systems Design (20 Credits)
  • Project Management Planning and Control (10 Credits)
  • Individual Project (40 Credits)
