The field of biomedical engineering combines fundamental concepts in engineering, biology and medicine in order to develop innovative approaches and new devices, materials, implants, algorithms, processes and systems for the medical industry. These could be used, for example, to assess and evaluate technology; to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases; for patient care and rehabilitation and to improve medical practice and health care delivery.

The first year of the Biomedical Engineering master's programme focuses on mandatory courses expanding students’ engineering skills and knowledge in areas like anatomy, physiology, biology and biochemistry. Courses in mathematics, statistics, multidimensional biomedical signal generation and analysis, combined with medical informatics and biomedical modeling and simulation, create a solid foundation for the continuation of the programme.

In the second year, three areas of specialisation are introduced: medical informatics, medical imaging and bioengineering. In addition to the specialisation tracks there is a mandatory course in the Philosophy of Science, preparing students for their degree project.

Graduates of the Biomedical Engineering programme should be able to:

  • formulate and solve engineering problems in the biomedical domain, for example designing devices, algorithms, systems and processes to improve human health by integrating engineering with a thorough understanding of life sciences.
  • use, propose and evaluate engineering tools and approaches.
  • identify and manage the particular problems related to the acquisition, processing and interpretation of biomedical signals and images.
  • integrate engineering and life science knowledge through advanced modeling and simulation techniques.
  • be able to clearly communicate engineering problems in the field of life sciences.

Through its mixture of mandatory and elective courses, the Biomedical Engineering curriculum supports and sustains an "Engineering for Health" mindset, which emphasises the importance of multidisciplinary and collaborative approaches to real life engineering problems in biology and medicine.
