Education on the Cardiac Anesthesia Service is designed to produce clinicians capable of providing state-of-the-art anesthesia for patients with cardiac, thoracic and vascular diseases. We stress the pathophysiology and perioperative implications of these diseases along with the principles of cardiopulmonary bypass, myocardial preservation, intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation along with transesophageal echocardiography, implantable/assist devices and implantations. Our active TEE program encompasses 15 ECHO-certified faculty members plus consulting cardiologists and radiologists.

In addition to the development of advanced intra-operative anesthesia skills, fellows are expected to achieve certification in echocardiography and become adept in the perioperative management of cardiac support devices.

Fellows in Cardiac Anesthesia will also have the opportunity to participate in research projects with Anesthesiology faculty as well as with Cardiothoracic Surgical and Cardiology staff.
