The Communication Studies Department provides students with attitudes, skills, and knowledge that will allow them to communicate effectively, clearly, persuasively, and vividly. Specific skills students will demonstrate are critical thinking, listening, problem solving as a group member, speech composition and presentation, conflict management, relationship maintenance and enhancement, and dramatic interpretation. In keeping with the SCC's strategic plan, the Communication Studies program emphasizes critical multicultural and intercultural education that teaches students to operate effectively in an increasingly multicultural society.

Beta Sigma Phi Visual Arts Scholarship
This scholarship is intended to attract, encourage and assist talented students enrolled in the Visual Arts programs at SCC. The award will be given to outstanding fine arts students, full or part-time.

 

Blavat Family Scholarship
Created in memory of Helen and Walter Blavat by their daughters, this scholarship will provide assistance to a student enrolled in the SCC Nursing Program. Preference is given to applicants with minor children living at home and/or who are pursuing careers in geriatric nursing.

 

Boeing Company Scholarship
Through the generosity of the Boeing company, this scholarship is being offered to support a student pursuing a degree in math, manufacturing or engineering.

 

Dislocated Worker Scholarship
For SCC students who are recently unemployed and have exhausted their Workforce Training funds, this scholarship is available to assist them in completing their program.

 

Dorothy Ball Gough Scholarship for Women
Dorothy Ball Gough was a strong supporter of Shoreline Community College. As stated by Dorothy, "I was not fortunate to have children; therefore, I had no expense putting a child through school and this is my way of helping a woman through school, an opportunity I didn't have ..." This scholarship will be offered to a woman over the age of 30 who plans to attend Shoreline Community College and meets the eligibility criteria.

 

Elizabeth R Thomas Alumni Nursing Scholarship
Elizabeth R Thomas began her career as an LPN, graduated from Shoreline Community College in 1982 with an AA/AS degree and became an RN. She continued her education at Seattle University and was the first African-American to complete the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Washington School of Nursing and the first one to work as an ARNP in Seattle. Elizabeth was a pediatric nurse practitioner at Odessa Brown clinic for over 25 years before her retirement. Due to Elizabeth's many contributions, she made in her practice and throughout the district and state nurses association, she was inducted into the WSNA Nurses Hall of Fame in 2000.  Scholarship awards will be based on need, merit and commitment to serving diverse communities and recipient's potential in his/her nursing career.

 

Eric Niemitalo Scholarship in Earth and Environmental Science
Eric Niemitalo was a student at Shoreline Community College. He was working towards an Associate of Science degree and planning to transfer to a four-year college to pursue a degree in Environmental Science with an emphasis in Geology. This scholarship is given in memory of Eric to assist promising students to carry on Eric's dream and continue their studies in Earth or Environmental Science (i.e. Geology, Environmental Science, Geography or Oceanography).

 

Friends of Mary Automotive Scholarship
The Friends of Mary Automotive Scholarship was established by the friends and family of Mary Nelson, a Shorewood High School Graduate who attended SCC. This scholarship is in memory of Mary and her love of autos and provides financial assistance to women in the automotive program at Shoreline Community College.

 

High School Academic Scholarship
The High School Academic Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors in Washington state who are enrolling at SCC for the upcoming school year and have demonstrated strong academic performance, leadership qualities and involvement in school and community activities.

 

Hugh S. Cannon Foundation Scholarship
This scholarship is funded by the generosity of the Hugh S. Cannon Foundation to support current SCC students with financial need who will be continuing their studies at Shoreline during the upcoming school year and demonstrate good academic performance.

 

Ina Knutsen Scholarship
Ina Knutsen was the first female member of the Shoreline Community College Board of Trustees. Ina wanted to continue her strong commitment to education and established the Ina Knutsen Scholarship fund. Applicant must be a single parent with a child/children under age 18 living at home. Preference is given to single fathers.

 

Jack Rogers Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established following the passing of Shoreline/Lake Forest Park resident Jack Rogers in October 2013. Jack was a longtime school teacher and administrator and received many awards for his teaching, his volunteerism to youth in the school community, his work for student success and service to public education and the community. Jack was a member of the Shoreline Community College Foundation and Shoreline Breakfast Rotary. Jack always put what was best for students first.

 

JD Humphreys Memorial Clean Energy Scholarship
JD Humphreys was a 31-year-old student in the Shoreline Community College Clean Energy Program who was tragically killed in October 2013. This scholarship was established by his classmates and instructor to remember

JD by supporting other students enrolled in the Clean Energy Program.

 

Joan Heeter Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Joan Heeter became a nurse after she attended Olympic College in her 50s. Her husband established this fund in memory of his wife after her passing. This scholarship is for nursing students and will be awarded based on need and with preference given to midlife women returning to school.

 

Joseph W. Sullivan Nursing Scholarship
The Joseph W. Sullivan Nursing Scholarship was established by his widow in December 2013 to honor her
late husband's memory and his request to provide assistance to nursing students who have financial need and are of Filipino descent. 

  

Joseph Wood Rogers Memorial Scholarship in Mathematics
Joe Rogers was an associate faculty at Shoreline Community College. He received his PhD in electrical engineering, but his true passion was mathematics. This scholarship is given to assist promising students to continue their studies in "pure" mathematics. The award is to be used for tuition at an accredited four-year college or university.

 

Linda Breiwick MLT Program Scholarship
The scholarship is available to Shoreline Community College Medical Laboratory Technology students who will be continuing their education at Shoreline during the upcoming school year.

 

Margaret Mallett Nursing Scholarship
Margaret Mallett was born in 1912 in North Dakota. She came to the Northwest in 1923 and graduated from Ballard High School in 1930 and from the Seattle General Hospital School of Nursing in 1933. Margaret passed away in Seattle in 1989. This fund was established in memory of Margaret by her son. This nursing scholarship will be awarded based on need, merit and community involvement.

 

Margaret Svec Scholarship
Margaret E. Svec was a member of the English faculty at Shoreline Community College from 1964, when the college opened, until 1978. She won awards for her poetry and her work was published in magazines and journals. After her retirement, Margaret actively supported the Women's Center as a presenter, mentor, advocate,
advisory committee member and donor. Margaret died at the age of 99 in September 2012. Her scholarship supports two women - one pursuing a transfer degree and the other pursuing a professional-technical degree.

 

Mark Galloway Automotive Scholarship
This scholarship established in memory of Mark Galloway, a Monroe High School and Sno-Isle Auto Technician Training Program graduate and SCC student who had been accepted into the GM-ASEP program at Shoreline Community College. Preference is given to a graduate, or soon to be graduate, of the Sno-Isle Auto Technician Training Program.

 

Martin Olsen Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2014 following the passing of Shoreline Community College’s much-loved counselor, Martin Olsen. Marty began his professional career at Shoreline as a Veterans’ Advisor after serving in the U.S. Army himself. He enjoyed having the opportunity to work with students on their educational and personal goals, and took pleasure in witnessing their growth. This scholarship will provide aid to Shoreline Community College students with financial need. Preference will be given to students who are U.S. Veterans.

 

Professor Emeritus Dr. Bill Johnson Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Johnson was a professor of mathematics at Shoreline Community College for 25 years. He had a strong commitment to student success and was always willing and available to help students in the sometimes perplexing world of mathematics. Award is for a student who has a strong emphasis of study in mathematics or science.

 

Rick Kaminski Memorial Athletic Scholarship
Rick Kaminski was an SCC Alumni who was SCC's Student Body President during 1973-1974. Rick was known to many as the Seattle Mariners' beloved "Peanut Man." This scholarship was established in memory of Rick and his support of Seattle sports teams and offers financial support to SCC student athletes who show strong leadership traits.

 

Ron LaFreniere Business Scholarship
Ron LaFreniere was a professor of Business Administration at Shoreline Community College for over 35 years. Upon his retirement, Ron wanted to continue his strong commitment to student success and established the Ron LaFreniere Business Administration Scholarship.

 

SCC Foundation Peggy O'Coyne Memorial Music Scholarship
The Peggy O'Coyne Memorial Scholarship, named in memory of a beloved Music Department secretary, was established to assist students who wish to pursue degrees and/or careers in music. Selected applicants will be asked to perform a live audition piece and be required to perform in at least one major ensemble each quarter during the upcoming school year.

 

SCC Full-Time Continuing Student Scholarship
The Shoreline Community College Foundation will offer scholarships to SCC students who will be continuing their education at Shoreline during the upcoming school year. These scholarships are available for students who demonstrate good academic performance and involvement in school and/or community activities.

 

SCC Part-Time Continuing Student Scholarship
The Shoreline Community College Foundation will offer scholarships to SCC students who will be continuing their education at Shoreline during the upcoming school year. These scholarships are available for part time students who demonstrate good academic performance while working 25-40 hours a week.

 

SCC Student Veteran Merit Scholarship
This scholarship was established to honor U.S. military veterans or current military members who are ongoing Shoreline Community College students and display exemplary academic performance.

 

Shawn Henrichsen Memorial Dental Hygiene Scholarship
The Shawn Henrichsen Memorial Dental Hygiene Scholarship was established by his parents Phyllis and Leo Henrichsen in July 2012 in memory of their son. Shawn was a 1996 graduate of Shoreline Community College Dental Hygiene Program. This fund was created to provide assistance to students enrolled in the SCC Dental Hygiene Program who have financial need.

 

Shoreline - Lake Forest Park High School Scholarship
High school seniors who are graduating this spring and live in the city of Shoreline or Lake Forest Park and will be attending SCC in the upcoming school year, are encouraged to apply for these scholarships. Awards will be made to students who demonstrate consist, positive academic achievement in their last three semesters.

 

Sonia O Kemp Nursing Scholarship
Established from the Sonia O. Kemp Charitable Trust fund in 2009, this nursing scholarship will be awarded to Shoreline Community College Nursing Students who display financial need.

 

The Sparrow Scholarship for Music Tech Students - In Memory of Ted Luttrell
Family and friends of Ted Luttrell, who was a student at SCC until his death from an aneurysm at age 20; established this scholarship. Ted was a gifted bassist and lyricist who had a passion for music and hoped to complete the audio recording program at SCC despite his scholastic and medical challenges. This scholarship is intended to support students who share Ted's gift and passion for music and also face challenges that make attaining their dream more difficult than the norm.

 

Swisher/Matesky Piano Scholarship
This scholarship assists students who wish to pursue degrees and/or careers in music with an emphasis on piano.  Through the generosity of donors, the SCC Foundation is making these scholarships available to students who plan to study at SCC during the coming school year.

 

Tammi O'Brien Shanks Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Tammi O'Brien Shanks graduated from SCC's Nursing Program in 1996 and worked at Northwest Hospital as a surgical nurse for 12 years. In 2001 she was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.  The hardest thing she ever had to do was to give up her nursing career due to her disability. She was patiently awaiting a lung transplant at the time of her death.  This scholarship established in memory of Tammi by her family and friends, will assist students in the Nursing Program at SCC.

 

Troy Wolff Memorial Humanities Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2013 following the passing of Shoreline Community College's beloved and respected co-worker, Troy Wolff. Troy was a member of the English faculty at Shoreline for 17 years and was chair of the English Department at the time of his tragic death. In addition to teaching composition and literature, Troy was a published author. He also taught in the college's study abroad programs taking students to Costa Rica, Spain, Greece and Turkey. Troy was committed to his students.

 

VIVA Hispanic Foundation NW Scholarship
The VIVA Hispanic Foundation is committed to giving Latino youth and families life long learning experiences through a series of initiatives and programs that enables them to become successful and contributing citizens of our community. These scholarships are awarded to students who are of Hispanic descent and attend SCC.

 

Vivian Wellman Batty Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Vivian Wellman Batty graduated from Edison Nursing School in the early 1960s. She entered nursing school while she was in her early '40s and her graduation fulfilled a life-long dream to become a nurse and a service to others. Most of her nursing career was spent at the VA Hospital on Beacon Hill and it is there that she served many of the veterans from the Vietnam War. This scholarship is available to Shoreline Community College Nursing student who will be continuing their education at Shoreline during the upcoming school year.

Merit Scholarship
The purpose of  this scholarship is to encourage students who have demonstrated outstanding potential to succeed. The student should believe that the opportunity offered by a Shoreline Community College education would be an integral part of reaching educational goals.
