The MSc in Cyber Security and Management is designed for those wishing to develop a career as a cyber security professional, or to take a leading technical or managerial role in an organisation critically dependent upon data and information communication technology. It is suitable for those from a computer science or information technology education background or courses with a significant component of either. Work experience will also be considered.

‘Delivering effective cyber security in a global business environment’

In 2010, the UK government announced a 650 million pound investment strategy into Cyber Security & declared that Cyber-Security had become a tier 1 priority alongside international terrorism and major national incidents. The UK is one of many governments around the world which recognize the serious nature of the threat that is emerging from the cyber-sphere.

Our goal for the MSc programme is to give focus to the strategic deployment and implementation of Cyber Security within an organization. We want to develop strategic thinkers who understand the Cyber threat to an organization and its resources and are able to build and support secure systems that support the strategic growth of a business. The course covers all aspects of Cyber Security including network security, computer security and information security.

The Masters course covers the most important technical concepts of security such as encryption, intrusion detection, penetration testing, access control, digital forensics/investigation, risk management, security governance and network security/computer security. Alongside this, the course focuses on the business context so that students can progress their careers more rapidly through organisations and aim very particularly at management positions.

‘A Masters course uniquely embedded in industry’

But this is just one way in which students on the course engage with industry. Further to this, you will have opportunities to visit and present at conferences, participate in specialist Industrial visits are available to all students and the course is assessed through assignments.

Students will have the opportunity to pursue projects in collaboration with industry in areas spanning both cyber security technologies and management issues. These might include risk management, security policy design, enterprise security cultures, digital investigation, incident response, intrusion detection, security architectures, cloud exploitation and procurement strategies, data forensics, privacy, social media, and security testing.

Course structure

The course is modular - each student takes a combination of core and elective modules. 10 modules are studied and assessed in total. Modules consist of nominally 40 hours directed tuition in the form of lectures, seminars, group work, presentations, case studies and e-learning. This is covered in a full-immersion, intensive week.
The taught modules account for 50% of the Master's degree. A major individual research project, submitted in the form of a dissertation accounts for the other 50%.

Modules

Between 7 and 9 core modules are specified for each of the MSc courses and these modules are compulsory. The core modules for each course are listed on the relevant course pages.

In addition to the core modules you can choose additional elective modules from an extensive list to make up to 10 modules for the course. There are a range of elective modules available, focussed on management, business, technology and other subject areas. And so you can choose your elective modules to tailor the degree to your interest and to support your future career aspirations.

Assessment

The course is assessed through Post Module Assignments and a major research project.

Post Module Assignments (PMA)

At the end of every module you will be given a post module assignment (PMA). This is a piece of assessed, written work which enables you to delve more deeply into the subject area of the module. It should take you 40-60 hours to complete and the submission deadline is four weeks after the end of the module.

Project and Dissertation

Throughout the year, alongside your modules and PMA’s, you will undertake a major individual research project which you then submit in the form of a dissertation at the end of August, followed by an oral exam where your Project Supervisor and an independent supervisor will discuss your project with you.

You do not need to choose your project in advance. At the beginning of your MSc course, you will be provided with a wide range of project titles which you can choose from. Many projects relate closely to research developments in industry or research at WMG.
The project accounts for 50% of MSc grade and through choosing a project suited to your interest and future career aspirations, this another great way to tailor your degree.
