Digital Library Learning (DILL) is a two-year international master’s programme for elite information professionals to provide them with the skills and competencies necessary to navigate through the rapidly evolving world of digital libraries. It is offered in cooperation between Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (Norway), Tallinn University (Estonia), and the University of Parma (Italy). Students will spend at least one semester at each institution.

The first semester starts with a summer school, and takes place in Oslo, Norway. For the second semester, students are in Tallinn, Estonia. The third semester contains a second summer school, and takes place in Parma, Italy. Students will also do an international internship during this time.

The Institute of Information Studies offers three curricula:

  • Information Science, Bachelor programme
  • Information Science, Master programme
  • Information and Communication Science, PhD programme

Students studying information science acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills for describing, preserving and mediating information, for management of information resources and information retrieval. They will learn how to analyse information needs and to organize information services. Book and library history, the trends in contemporary book industry and preservation of cultural heritage are also among the courses. Students will also learn information management in organizations, records management and digital archiving.

The students of Master level can choose between four modules: Information and knowledge management; Records management; Digital Libraries and Digital Cultural Heritage Management. Two modules are opened each year.

Our graduates work as information specialists in information centres, libraries and other memory institutions and as records managers and archivists in public and private institutions.

Prerequisite requirements of the programmeA degree in Library and Information Science (based on no less than three years of full-time study - 180 ECTS) or equivalent qualifications, such as a degree in another relevant subject.English skills. Students from non-English speaking countries must have passed either (a) IELTS (International English Language Testing System) (minimum score: 5.5 points) or (b) TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) (minimum score: 550 on the paper based test, 213 on the computer based test, or 79 on the Internet based test)Not all applicants need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS test certificate.
