As part of the master programme you will choose an academic profile in which you want to specialise and thereby which areas you want to work in once graduated.

The master programme allows you to concentrate on your specific field of interest. In addition to completing the core subjects you must choose an academic profile in which you will write your master thesis. An academic profile is a specialisation in a subject area which is related to one or more research groups.

Academic profiles

Presently, you can choose between Biotechnology and Bio-refining, Functional Materials, Academic Profile in Chemical Process Engineering and Organic Synthesis and Catalysis.

Regardless of your academic profile you will acquire a range of general competencies in numerical method, statistics, physical chemistry, theory of science, risk assessment and economics.
You will learn to design, plan and optimise chemical and biotechnical processing plants and products based on technical, resource and environmental considerations. You will be qualified to run laboratory work as well as to develop and validate analytical measuring methods.

With a master of science in engineering degree in Chemistry you will be qualified for consultancy assignments as well as research and development tasks within the core competencies which you have acquired through your academic profile.

Project based and research based study environment

You become part of a project based and problem based study environment where you work in project groups. You and your fellow students are responsible for planning and carrying out the project and for meeting the deadlines. Usually we receive the project outlines from companies and we emphasise that the problems you solve are real-world problems.

The final semester is devoted to the master thesis, which will typically be carried out at or in cooperation with an industrial company.

Many different career options

With a master of science in engineering degree in Chemistry you will have a range of job opportunities in Denmark and abroad. The degree qualifies you for work in production, development and environmental control in, for example, the medical and food industry.

It is also possible to continue on a three-year research programme which will lead to a PhD degree.
Another option is to study an industrial research programme which is carried out in close cooperation with a company where you are employed.

Graduates who have completed this master programme are entitled to use the title of Master of Science (MSc) in Engineering (Chemistry).

At the Master of Science in Engineering programme in Chemistry you can specialise in one of four academic profiles The master programme is a two-year programme on top of a relevant bachelor degree.

In the first semester of the master programme you can choose one of the below academic profiles:

* Biotechnology and Bio-refining
* Functional Materials
* Academic Profile in Chemical Process Engineering
* Organic Synthesis and Catalysis

Teaching in these subjects will end in the eighth semester. In addition to the profile courses, it will be possible to attend elective courses.

Each academic profile covers several research areas such as spectroscopy, electrochemistry, atmospheric chemistry and organic synthesis.

Master thesis, ninth and tenth semester

In the ninth and tenth semester you will complete a master thesis in your academic profile. The master thesis is often carried out in cooperation with a company and it is possible to spend part of or the entire project time at the company, at a research institution or at the university. The master thesis can also be part of a study abroad period.

1. A bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Microbiology with solid knowledge and understanding of chemical reaction engineering. Applicants with a similar bachelors degree if their academic qualifications correspond with the bachelor degrees mentioned above. Additional requirements may apply for the different profiles of the masters programme. 2. English language skills. English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5 TOEFL paper-based test score : 575 TOEFL iBT® test: 88

The board of the University of Southern Denmark decides from year to year which study programmes will benefit from the scholarships and the University will recommend the most qualified applicants in these programmes for a scholarship. Therefore it is not possible to apply for this scholarship. If you are a non-EU student and applying for a programme which offers this scholarship you will automatically be considered for it.

BHJ Scholarship
Only available for students applying for a master programme at our Sønderborg Campus

Six one-year scholarships are issued pr. year: three for studies within the technical field i.e. Mechatronics and Innovation & Business respectively, and three are for studies within the field of business administration i.e. Business Relationship Management.

A scholarship of DKK 40.000 may be granted if and when the requirements are met. It is paid in two instalments of DKK 20.000 per semester. The scholarship grant depends on acceptance and enrolment as a full-time student in one of the above mentioned programmes.
