The course is designed for students who wish to develop the understanding and working knowledge of the principles and applications of a variety of surveying devices and techniques.

Versions of this MSc have been running at the University of Nottingham, UK for almost 20 years. This course runs entirely at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. This course provides students with the ability to appreciate and apply state of the art engineering surveying techniques within apractical context. The course includes the principles behind surveying such as reference systems, and geodesy, as well as the techniques and equipment used in engineering surveying, photogrammetry and satellite positioning systems such as GPS.

In addition to the formal part of the course, we run practical classes that allow students to see and learn how to use and operate a very wide variety of state of the art surveying equipment and software, including laser scanners, servo driven total stations, RTK and Network RTK GPS, digital and analogue photogrammetry, LiDAR, Sar and InSAR.

Students will develop:

Course Structure

The course consists of 120 credits of core and optional taught modules along with a 60 credit major individual research-based project undertaken over the summer term. It also available as a Postgraduate Diploma which covers the same taught modules but does not undertake the research project. Please be aware modules are subject to change.

The course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES).

  • Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing 15 credits
  • Practical Field Course 15 credits

The finale of the taught aspect of the course is the surveying field course, which brings together all the taught aspects through a week long series of practical tasks.

Individual Project

Once you have completed the modules, you will undertake a supervised research project over the summer term. Students receive dedicated supervision from staff members. This is a key component of the degree, affording students the opportunity to conduct independent research which maybe related to their employment.

Previous research projects have included:

  • Deformation monitoring of the Forth Road Bridge using GPS
  • Laser scanning and photogrammetry for forest and woodland surveys
  • Testing of a new small format integrated sensor airborne mapping system

Premaster Programme

The Premaster Programme is part of the Two-year Postgraduate Programme. It is designed for those students who have not reached the language level required to enter postgraduate degree programmes directly, and its overall aim is to help these students succeeded in their future studies at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China. It equips students with the language and study skills that they need to manage their studies independently, so that they can meet the demands of their academic courses.

Applicants are usually required to have a 2.1 honours degree (or international equivalent) for the MSc, in a relevant discipline, for example science, engineering or mathematics. Scholarships

To encourage academic excellence, The University of Nottingham Ningbo China is now offering a comprehensive and expanding range of scholarships to international students. Scholarships for up to 33% are available on merit.

In addition to our PhD scholarship opportunities, for 2014 entry, The University of Nottingham Ningbo China is offering five types of non-competitive scholarships and two types of competitive scholarships.

Competitive scholarships

Ningbo Government International Student Scholarship for Academic Excellence*

This scholarship is awarded to approximately twelve academically talented applicants who each receive a tuition fee scholarship of 30,000 RMB.

Students who would like to apply for this scholarship should hold, or be on course to achieve a 2:1 They will need to prepare the following documents and submit to the Recruitment & Admissions Office by 31 May 2014:

  • Application form
  • A personal statement of 500 words. Students may go a maximum of 10% under, or over the word count. Students may choose to use the personal statement from their main course application, or submit a second statement.

The University of Nottingham Ningbo China High Achievers Scholarship

Each year the University rewards 25 international applicants with a 20,000 RMB scholarship towards their tuition fee. Scholarships are largely reserved for students with outstanding academic results, but consideration is also given to students with exceptional extra-curricular achievements or employment accolades.

All masters applicants are automatically assessed for the awards which are announced shortly after the course application deadline of 31 May.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic results in the previous academic year. The amount of each scholarship and the ratio of winners are as follows:

Non-competitive scholarships

Alumni Scholarship*

In recognition of the academic ability of University of Nottingham graduates, students applying for postgraduate studies at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China and who have previously studied at undergraduate level at The University of Nottingham, UK, China or Malaysia are entitled to a 10% tuition fee scholarship.

Family Scholarship*

A 10% fee reduction for the children, brothers, sisters, husbands or wives of students who are currently registered on award bearing courses at The University of Nottingham Ningbo or who have already successfully completed award-bearing courses.

Universitas 21 Alumni Scholarship

Scholarships of 10% towards tuition fees are available to students who:

  • are a graduate of a U21 partner university AND
  • are classed as an overseas student for fee purposes AND
  • register on a new full-time degree programme at UNNC in September 2014

The scholarship is for the first year only and is presented once the evidence of successfully completed study at a Universitas 21 Partner University is received.

Study Abroad and International Exchange Alumni Scholarship

Scholarships of 10% towards tuition fees are available to students who:

  • have attended The University of Nottingham on a Study Abroad or International Exchange programme AND
  • are classed as an overseas student for fee purposes AND
  • register on a new full-time degree programme at Nottingham in September 2014

The scholarship is for the first year only and is given once the evidence has been completed and Study Abroad or Exchange status has been confirmed by us.
