The Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) is a 4-year direct Honours degree programme. It is a truly interdisciplinary programme offered jointly by the Faculty of Science (FoS) and Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) with participation from the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Law, School of Design and Environment, NUS Business School, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Saw Swee Hock School of Public Healthand the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. One-of-its kind programme in NUS and Singapore, and is internationally unique. Designed for top students with a passion for the environment. Programme adopts a broad-based and interdisciplinary approach to effectively address the societal and scientific needs for understanding complex, modern environmental issues such as climate change, land use, water usage, alternative energy and the building of liveable high-density cities. It harnesses the synergies of domain experts from the participating faculties and schools. And it adopts new pedagogies in ensuring that our students receive the best in environmental education.

A programme leading to a Bachelor's degree with Honours requires a minimum of 160 MCs, and will usually take four years to complete.

Admission Requirements

Students with aptitude and passion for environmental issues are welcome to apply for direct admission into the Bachelor of Environmental Studies if they meet the following miniml criteria:

  • Good H1 pass or equivalent in Mathematics
  • Good H1 pass or equivalent in either Biology or Chemistry

Students who do not meet the above-stated criteria but have a keen interest for the BES may be interviewed for suitability for the programme. 

Admission will be on a competitive-basis. Intake each year is about 50 depending on the quality of the applicants.

English Language Requirement

  • IELTS: 6.5 overall with 6.5 in Reading and Writing components;
  • MUET: 200;
  • TOEFL: 580 for paper-based / 92-93 for internet-based.

Please note that only IELTS and/or TOEFL scores obtained in the two years leading up to 1 March of the year of application will be considered. 

Scholarships administered by Office of Financial Aid

Donated Scholarships 
Current students who have achieved a CAP of at least 4.00 or grade average of B+ and prospective students with excellent ‘A’ level results are eligible to apply.

The award valued at S$3,000, is tenable for one year. Re-application is necessary if the scholar wishes to be considered again for the award. The scholar has to sustain his excellent academic record in order to be considered for the award.

Freshmen will be considered through their application for admission to NUS. No separate scholarship application is required. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted via email around end August till September.

The National Environment and Water (NEW) Scholarship

The NEW Scholarship is an undergraduate scholarship targeted at students who have a keen interest in the dynamic environment and water sector.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) and NEA have agreed to collaborate and provide students enrolled under the Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) Programme the opportunity to apply for the NEW Scholarship.

Scholars are required to serve a bond of four (4) years upon completion of the studies.

NUS Awards for Study Abroad (NASA)

There are three categories of awards:

  • NASA (Exchange Awards)

  • NASA (Enhancement Awards)

  • NASA (Degree Awards)

Tuition Grant

The substantial tuition subsidy from the Government of Singapore comes in the form of a tuition grant which is administered by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and offered to all admitted students. Students who apply and are approved for the tuition grants need only pay subsidised fees. While the tuition grant is not repayable, and Singapore citizens in receipt of it will not be required to undertake a service bond, the following accountability measures will apply:

All Singapore Permanent Residents and international students (except those already in receipt of a service bond from the PSC or the Ministry of Health) will be required to undertake a service bond under the terms of the tuition grant to work for a Singapore-registered company for three years upon completion of their degrees so as to discharge some of their obligations to the Singapore public for the high subsidy to their university education.

Incoming Exchange Students

Before you apply to be an exchange student at NUS there are some important things you need to know.

You can apply for fee-wavier coursework-based exchange at NUS, if you:

  • are nominated by the exchange coordinator from one of our SEP Exchange Partners. Contact your university's study abroad or international office for more information;

  • have completed at least two semesters of undergraduate studies and must continue to be registered as a degree-seeking students at your home university throughout your intended duration of exchange at NUS;

  • are proficient in English in order to benefit from your studies at NUS. The medium of instruction at NUS is English (except for Asian or European studies, where a good command of the respective Asian or European language is a prerequisite).

If you are a student at a university that is not one of NUS' Partner Universities, you can apply as a "Non-Exchange" student on a fee-paying basis. 

Once you have reviewed all of the requirements and procedures for studying on exchange at NUS and you have obtained formal approval from your home university's student exchange coordinator, you are welcome to apply online during the stipulated application period.
