The MA in Hispanic Studies (1 year full-time - CKE41) and (2 year part-time CKE85) provides graduates in Spanish with an opportunity to develop their language skills and deepen their understanding of the cultures of the Hispanic world. It involves introduction to translation studies along with regular practice in advanced translation and offers a range of options for further study which focus on both Spain and Latin America, and include Catalan and Galician as well as Castilian.

The MA in Hispanic Studies involves a taught element, worth 50% and a thesis (12,000 - 15,000 words) also worth 50%. For the taught element, students are required to take four core subjects, namely: LL6000 Research Methods, HS6002 Research Training, HS6003 Advanced Translation Skills (English-Spanish), and HS6004 Approaches to Translation (Spanish-English). In addition to these core subjects, students must take two optional courses from a range of areas including language, literature, film and linguistics.

Learning OutcomesOn successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:
* Communicate effectively to publishable and professional standards in written and oral Spanish;
* Produce high quality translations from English to Spanish of literary and non-literary texts;
* Produce translations of publishable quality from Spanish into English displaying due knowledge of grammatical structures and a high level of lexical and syntactical sophistication;
* Design a research project and identify an appropriate theoretical and methodological framework consistent with their area of study;
* Develop individual research strategies and produce critical bibliographies;
* Display an independent approach to critical analysis and evaluation .

Candidates for the MA in Hispanic Studies take 90 credits as follows:

Part I:

* LL6010 Research Methodologies in Modern Languages (5 credits)
* HS6002 Research Training (5 credits)
* HS6003 Advanced Translation Skills (English-Spanish) (10 credits)
* HS6004 Approaches to Translation (Spanish-English) (5 credits)

In addition to the core modules in language and research, students choose two options of 10 credits each from the following list. One of these should be in the area of the candidate's research dissertation. The choice of options must be approved by the MA Coordinator, Dr Martín Veiga.

Part II:

* HS6001 Research Dissertation (12-15,000 words) (45 credits)

Applicants should normally have obtained at least a Second Class (Grade 1) Honours in Spanish (language and literature/culture) in a primary degree. Applicants may be required to present themselves for interview or further assessment before a final decision is made.
