In recent years, the topic of digital transformation in companies and the needs of qualified employees has developed rapidly. In the context in digital transformation, companies face the challenge of qualifying their employees as an "enabler" at the interface of business and IT.

In the new Master Program in Information Systems Engineering and Management, IT specialists and computer scientists, as well as business administrators and engineers, will be enabled to advance internal and external digitalization and to assume leadership functions, especially in the field of digital transformation of companies.

Educational organization

The Master's program is offered at the HECTOR School, Technology Business School of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). It is especially designed for engineering professionals who have already worked in their jobs for approx. three years. It is designed as a part-time program over a duration of about 20 months and concludes with a Master of Science awarded by the KIT.
The academic calendar for all Master's programs of the HECTOR School starting in October each year consist of 10 intensive modules, each with a duration of 10 days. At the end, the Master's program concludes with a Master's thesis.

Written and oral exams at the end of each module and Master's thesis and colloquium after completion of the modules

Course objectives

During the last decades, we witnessed a growing importance of information technology (IT) in business and society alongside increasing speed of innovation cycles. IT has become core for businesses from an operational company-internal and external customer perspective. Today, companies have to rethink their way of doing business. Digital products and services will characterize tomorrow’s world and organizations are digitally transformed across all functional areas. Capturing the emerging opportunities requires globally thinking visionaries and managers, who are able to combine profound competence in information technology with excellent know-how in management.

The Master Program Information Systems Engineering & Management (ISEM) qualifies graduates to drive digital transformation of products, services, and organizations from a business and IT perspective. Graduates encounter digitalization challenges with an engineering orientation and solve them with the help of modern management methods. They are also in a position to make efficient and effective use of information technologies within organizations following a socio-technical paradigm. Competitive and innovative digital products and services are developed and optimized to successfully accompany and direct digital changes in organizations and business networks.

The program empowers graduates to apply an interdisciplinary approach to problems and trains adequate solution with a systems-oriented mindset. From an engineering perspective, graduates understand the role and potential of digital platforms from an enterprise and market point of view including state-of-the-art technologies such as Internet-of-Things and Blockchain. They know modern software and system engineering techniques with a specific emphasis on the cloud computing paradigm.

ISEM graduates can design and optimize business processes following a top-down and bottom-up approach. They also know how to transform (big) data to actionable knowledge following an engineering approach. These competencies are enriched with security and privacy engineering concepts and technologies complemented with real-world cases on critical infrastructure management. Finally, ISEM graduates can specialize in digital services or cognitive systems & data science. In the respective specialization modules, they collect deep knowledge in one of the two fields.

In addition to the engineering expertise, ISEM graduates share five management modules with other master programs at HECTOR School. This fosters interdisciplinary networking across industries and provides the participants with state-of-the-art business knowledge in strategy, finance, accounting, marketing, innovation management, project management, decision and risk management and human resource management. Therefore, they can consider the commercial implications of technology-centric decisions and develop a holistic view on business and IT. 

Language requirements

English language test (e.g., TOEFL or IELTS) for non-native speakers (TOEFL score of at least 95 iBT)

Academic requirements

University qualification:
Bachelor's, Master's, Diplom etc. (university, university of applied sciences, cooperative state university)
Exception: other degrees may be accepted (e.g. professional experience)

Professional experience:
Depending on the first degree's level (210 or 180 ECTS points)

• One or two years of practical experience in the specific field of the course is required.
• Three years' work experience are recommended.
• References are needed as evidence.

English qualification:
Evidence of an adequate knowledge of the English language is required, normally in the form of a TOEFL (at least 95 iBT) or an equal qualification which must be checked individually.

Enrollment fees

The tuition fee for the entire M.Sc. Program is 30.000 € (thirty thousand EUR). Please note that this fee is tax-deductible.

Arrival support

The HECTOR School office offers support to international participants regarding e.g. arrival procedures, VISA requirements etc.

Services and support for international students

The HECTOR School office takes care of international participants during their stay in Germany, also offering a wide range of social and cultural events, workshops etc.

Accommodation

The HECTOR School is integrated into the campus of the International Department of the KIT with its own campus accommodation, which is available to all students of the International Department upon request.
