The modules can be completed in any order. For the first semester, the module of Historical Methodology is recommended.

Study abroad unit(s)

The course is modularised and integrated, meaning all students are obligated to study at a minimum of two of the participating universities in different countries. Studies from the partner universities will be recognised. A minimum of 30 ECTS credits must be obtained abroad.

Forms of assessment

In general, students will write a term paper/essay (2 ECTS credits). At the partner universities, other forms of assessment are possible (written exam or oral exam - according to the local practice). The form of assessment will be determined by the academic teaching staff of the module.

The Master's thesis must be written in English and will be supervised by academic staff from two different partner universities.

It is possible to complete the entire programme in English, but in order to benefit the most from the programme, participants should have knowledge of at least two modern foreign languages. A minimum of 50 ECTS credits must be earned in English courses.

Course objectives

The main study goals are to learn scientific self-reflection, the acquisition and development of judgement skills, and methods of historical practice. Students will obtain the ability to analyse historical arguments as well as rhetoric from the past and in the present. Special emphasis is placed on comparative history and transfer-analysis. The programme provides an opportunity for students to participate in current research projects with interdisciplinary issues.

Upon successful completion of the Master's programme, students will have read a wide range of primary sources and secondary literature. They will present their own arguments based on what they have read. This will enable them to develop independent opinions and assessments of different topics of European history.
