Language Technology

The first semester of the two-year programme provides a starting point for further studies. It consists of courses in linguistics for students with a computer science background and courses in computer science for those with a background in a linguistics-oriented subject. The first semester also includes a research-oriented overview of language technology for all master students.

The second and third semesters provide further depth in key language technology areas, with an emphasis on statistical methods. There is also room for elective courses, allowing you to tailor the programme to your career plans. The fourth and final semester is dedicated to work on a Master thesis.

Career

Many language technologists work with systems for machine translation, and tools for translators, as well as with other kinds of authoring support systems. Furthermore, systems for document retrieval and classification and information extraction are important language technology applications. Another important branch is speech technology, where systems producing and recognising speech are developed. In addition to design and development, many language technologists work in customer support, system evaluation, and maintenance. Language technologists also work with research and education in the academic world.

Degree

The programme leads to a Master of Arts (120 credits) with L­anguage Technology as the main field of study.

The first semester also includes a research-oriented overview of language technology for all master students.

The second and third semesters provide further depth in key language technology areas, with an emphasis on statistical methods. There is also room for elective courses, allowing the student to tailor the programme to his/her career plans. The fourth and final semester is de­dicated to work on a Master’s thesis. The students are encouraged to write the thesis in cooperation with a company or a public institution, inside or outside of Sweden.

• Mathematics for language technologists required for some students.

Third semester

• Language Technology: Research and Development, 15

• Machine Learning in Natural Language Processing 7.5

Fourth semester

• Master thesis in Language Technology, 30 hp (LT).

A Bachelor degree, equivalent to a Swedish degree of at least 180 credits (i.e. three years of full-time study), and at least 60 credits in Language Technology or Computational Linguistics; or at least 60 credits in Computer Science; or at least 60 credits in Linguistics or a language subject along with 15 credits in programming and 7.5 credits in logic or discrete mathematics.Proof of skills in English to a level corresponding to English B in the Swedish secondary school. Uppsala University provides several different scholarships for students. The scholarships cover exclusively the tuition fees for courses within the programme, i e 30 credits per semester.
