Course Content

Year 1
You will study Biomedical Sciences and learn about the oral cavity. Manual skills are also developed and you will commence treating patients in the first trimester. The types of treatments carried out at this stage will include giving oral health advice and carrying out periodontal (gum) treatment. You will be integrated with other health professionals in the Foundations of Practice module and modules in Human Disease and Plaque Related Diseases will help assist you with the required knowledge to support the clinical care of your patients.
Year 2 sees an introduction of additional clinical skills and you will start treating patients for restorative procedures such as dental fillings. Modules to assist you with the requisite knowledge for this stage include Dental Biomaterials, Pain and Anxiety Control and Paediatric Dentistry. Dental Radiography is also taught to enable you to take dental radiographs.
Year 3
You will continue clinical work in the hospital and outreach clinics. Associated modules include Dental Research which involves undertaking an elective project related to an area in your chosen field, Oral Disease and Preparation for Practice.

Requirements

Higher: BBBB, A Level: CCc, ILC: B2B2B2B2

Essential Subjects: Biology, English (Higher/ILC H/GCSE C), Mathematics (ILC-O)

Good communication skills are essential to be able to deal with patients and parents or carers. Students are expected to adhere to the strict code of conduct outlined by the General Dental Council and a high standard of maturity, confidentiality and professionalism is expected to be maintained throughout the course.
