The Master of Science in Applied and Engineering Physics is a two year full time programme with 120 CP in total. The programme is consecutive to the Physics Bachelor programme and leads to actual research contents.

During first year students choose from the wide catalogue of specialty modules, according to their interests. The catalogue consists of chosen topics from experimental to theoretical Physics and represents the scientific profile of the Physics-Department at TUM. The research areas cover Condensed matter (KM), Particle-, Nuclear- and Astrophysics (KTA) and Biophysics (BIO). The applied fields in these areas compose the contents for the study programme Applied and Engineering Physics (AEP). Examples of the catalogue are listed at the end of the course description. Four elective modules (worth 20 CP) have to be chosen from the focus AEP, two more elective courses (10 CP) from the complementary fields.

The programme is consolidated by the mandatory course in Advanced Theoretical Physics and completes hereby the broad profile and professional focus of the physics course. Additional students have to pass a Proseminar and the advanced laboratory. These are thematically assigned to the main focus and will be credited as course achievements.

Connections to neighbouring sciences and applications of Physics in Engineering or Medicine are ensured through the Non-physical electives. Students can choose exams compassing 8 CP from a catalogue that is to be defined by the examinations board. Two CP will be credited as course achievements from the module “Soft skills”.

During second year students concentrate on their research project which can be carried out either at one of the institutes of the physics department of TUM or one of the associated institutes (Max Planck Institutes, etc.). Students are directly involved in the research on a recent topic in either Theoretical or Experimental Physics whilst working on their project. The research is supplemented by the Master Seminar (10 CP) and the Masters-Praktikum (15 CP) which provide necessary prerequisites in conception and creation for the following Master’s thesis (30 CP). The Master’s thesis has to be defended in the concluding Master Colloquium (5 CP).

A list of the documents you have to send as paper copies is written on the application form that you will get at the end of the online process. Please send the documents together with the signed application form directly to TUM Admissions Office. A document test of uni-assist is not needed.

The following list gives some additional information on some of the documents:

CV

Please provide a complete and up-to-date CV. You can upload the document during the online process.
Motivation letter

Describe in 400 to 800 words your reasons for undertaking the chosen Master's degree program in physics at TUM, stating on basis of which specific talents and interests you are particularly suited for it. You have to justify your qualification based on your previous studies, paying careful attention to these matching the academic requirements of our Master's programs. You are also expected to state the elective courses you aim to choose if admitted and elaborate on the fields of research you are interested on. The motivation letter has to be connected to the chosen Master's program, a general statement about your interest in physics is not sufficient.

Academic records

You have to hand in your transcript, diploma and degree certificate as certified or notarized copies. We do not accept non-certified copies. You must submit your documents (i) in the original language and (ii) include certified or notarized translations into English or German.

Please do not send original documents! We will not be able to send you the documents back after the admission procedure is completed.
You are required to submit the academic records from each university or college you have attended, including the official transcript of records (mark sheets) and evidence of all degrees awarded.
If you are applying before graduation, please send us the official transcript of records together with a list of the courses to be completed by the time of graduation and provide us with your degree certificate as soon as possible, latest one year after starting your studies at TUM (see also the remark at admission in advance).
If your Bachelor's degree is from a non-German university, please provide also official descriptions of all your courses. A link to the relevant website of your university may also be sufficient.

Language proficiency

The certificates accepted for German language skills (for the Master's programs taught in German and applicants which are not native German speakers) and for English language skills for the Master's program Physics (Applied and Engineering Physics) are institutional at TUM.
In addition to these regulation it will be accepted if at least 10 ECTS in your underlying Bachelor were taught and examined in English. This has to be certified by your university.

Qualification for admission to higher education

The certificate of qualification for admission to higher education is your school leaving certificate which allows the entrance to n university.

Health insurance

For enrollment you also need a certificate of health insurance.

Aptitute Assessment

The procedure is divided in two stages:

  1. In the first stage the committee rates the submitted documents on a scale from 0 to 100 points, where 100 points is the best possible result, where the following scheme is applied:
    • Starting from 60 points, the points corresponding to the missing competences are subtracted.
    • For every one-tenth of the grade, which is better than 3.0 (German grading system), one point is added (max. 20 points). For the conversion of the grades from different grading systems the "Bayerische Formel" is used.
    • The statement of motivation is graded on a scale from 0 to 20 (maximum value) independently by two members of the committee. The average of these two values is added in points.
  2. Applicants reaching at least 66 points have passed the selection procedure. The claim to obtain missing competences (admission to the aptitude assessment) is independent of this decision.

  3. The remaining applicants come to the second stage which is performed as an oral test (20-30 minutes). Here it is decided whether the applicant is capable for the Master's degree programme.

The topics of the interview are your motivation to come to TUM, your estimation of your situation and some topics in physics.

Please consider: Extra courses given as a condition due to missing competences have to be passed within one year after starting the Master's degree program. In addition, they are usually taught and examined in German, since they are taken from our Bachelor's degree program.

On 24 April 2013, the Bayerische Landtag reached the decision to elminate university tuition fees. As of winter semester 2013/2014, students are required to pay only the student union and basic semester ticket fees in the amount of 113 Euro.
