The programme Master of Science in Production Systems Engineering builds upon the existing qualifications of the students and facilitates a deepening of the knowledge in the fields of materials, manufacturing processes, process and product engineering, manufacturing system design, manufacturing competitiveness and management.

Skills such as leading and functioning within project teams and being able to communicate effectively will be strengthened. By extensive laboratory experience, the graduate will be able to carry out fundamental or applied research, to identify vital work steps and to communicate the results of such research.

Educational System & Study Organisation
Organization of the Programme

The courses are organized in winter semesters (beginning 1 October) and summer semesters (beginning 1 April). The lectures are held in the wintersemester by mid of february and in the summer semester by mid of July. Most exams are given in the lecture free period (mid february-end of march/mid july-end of september).

Self-Responsibility of Students

As part of the German higher education system, students are challenged to develop a high degree of self-responsibility, self-motivation and self-organization. For most lectures no attendance duty exists and students are encouraged to plan the studies by themselves.

Teaching Staff

The scientific content of the MSc programme is conducted by several institutes of the RWTH Aachen University's faculty of mechanical engineering. For each course a professor holds the scientific responsibility, while the lectures are usually conducted not only by the professors themselves, but also by their chief-engineers, as well as by their research associates. The responsibility for education is usually a shared responsibility for chief-engineers as well as research associates, who have an official authorization to fulfil this task.

Teaching Units

The teaching of the MSc. programme takes places in various forms: lectures, exercises and practices. Lectures are usually taught via a presentation of the relevant teaching material. Some professors might also ask questions and seek for interaction with the students. In the corresponding exercises the teaching material will be applied by the students in a more interactive form, e.g. via calculation tasks. Practices are also a more applied form of teaching and can e.g. take place in labs.

University Campus

The faculty of mechanical engineering, faculty 4, is one of nine faculties of RWTH Aachen University. Around 50 different institutes belong to the faculty 4 which research in the field of mechanical engineering and also conduct the teaching for students of RWTH Aachen University. The institutes are located in buildings all over the city centre of RWTH Aachen and the Campus Melaten, in the north of Aachen. Further important buildings, such as the RWTH Aachen University main building and the study centre "Super C" are located in the city centre, too, while the International Academy and the faculty 4 can be found in Aachen's south. Thus in Aachen there is not such a thing as a "single campus", more one will find the university everywhere present in the city.

Programme Structure
To achieve a Master of Science in "Production Systems Engineering" students have to satisfy certain requirements by taking compulsory courses and elective courses. The compulsory subjects cover the fundamentals of Production Systems Engineering, such as Welding and Joining Technologies, Manufacturing Technology, Machine Tools, Production Management, Quality Management as well as Industrial Engineering, Ergonomics and Work Organisation.

For the elective subjects students can choose from one of several possibilities in the fields of Logistics, Virtual Machine Tools, Advanced Software Engineering, Machine Design Process, Tribology, Production Metrology, Modelling, Mechatronics or Control Engineering.

In addition to the course work, students must also complete the following as part of their programme:

* A complementary German course (to be completed with the DSM exam)
* A four month Master thesis.

Programme Objective
Product engineers work in a multitude of areas within industry and research departments, including development, design, sales and distribution, quality management and organisation. The Master's degree awarded by the RWTH is recognised worldwide and qualifies graduates for further PhD studies.

Applicant's Profile * Bachelor of Engineering or Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, such as Automotive, Aerospace or Energy Engineering, Manufacturing, Structural, Industrial or Production Engineering, awarded by an internationally recognized university-level institution. * Fundamental knowledge in the fields of engineering, mathematics and natural science that should be covered within the following modules: Mathematics, Mechanics, Material Sciences, Thermodynamics, Informatics/Programming/Computer Science, Physics, Technical Drawing and CAD. * Furthermore knowledge in the following courses is requested: Fluid Dynamics, Automatic Control, Design Engineering, Production Management, Machine Tools, Manufacturing Technology, Electrical Drives, Quality Management, Fluid Techniques, Materials Techniques. * Very good performance in your undergraduate studies. * New for applicants in 2014: practical work experience.Application Process * Please apply online and follow the steps of the online system. * Once you have finished the online process, please print the application form and send it via post. * Application deadline is March 1 of each year. Practical professional experiences of as a rule not less than one year is required. This can be completed in whole or in part as practical training or in form of work experience in relevant areas for the master´s course of study during or after the first recognised university degree. Students may furthermore admit to the programme on the condition that missing time periods of professional experiences will be obtained in the course of the four semesters of the master programme.

There are several scholarship opportuntities available for international students. We highly recommend students to start with the scholarship research as soon as possible. Please find some institutions that offer scholarships or search engines for the same below.

Scholarship Databases
* DAAD: The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) offers on its website a scholarship database with a broad variety of scholarship programmes for international students. Please refer to the DAAD Website to find more information about these scholarship programmes.

* RWTH Aachen University's offers also a Scholarship Database.

Further Scholarship Opportunities
* Students from Bulgaria, Estonia, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Poland, Rumania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic or Hungary may also apply for a Mummert Scholarship. Please refer to the website to find all relevant information Mummert Website

* Students from Russia may apply for the Carl Arthur Pastor Scholarship that might support students up to two years.

* Students from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe can be admitted to a scholarship programme of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. Please check the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Website to see if you meet the requirements.

* Female students of Mechanical Engineering of RWTH Aachen are welcome to apply for the "Henry Ford Stipendium" which offers not only financial aid but also an intense supporting programme.

* RWTH International Academy - Women Engineers Scholarship:

The number of international female students in the area of Mechanical Engineering is relatively low with around 10 percent according to the RWTH Key Data 2011. This scholarship was established to enable more qualified female engineering students to pursue a masters degree at RWTH Aachen International Academy in order to establish gender equality amongst the international students of English-taught masters programmes in Engineering. It is intended for female students who are admitted at the RWTH Aachen University to one of the following masters programmes: MSc Management and Engineering, MSc Production Systems Engineering, MSc Computer Aided Conception and Production in Mechanical Engineering, and MSc Textile Engineering.
