The MPP prepares students for future leadership positions in the public sector, business, and civil society. It offers analytically challenging and practice-oriented courses in the areas of governance, policy analysis, management, and leadership. The MPP fosters intellectual growth in a professional, research-intensive environment characterised by public debate and engagement.

Educational organisation

In their first semester at the Hertie School, MPP students take foundational courses in economics, statistics, public management, governance and policy processes. In their second semester, MPP students choose between two concentrations: policy analysis or management. Students attend a second statistics course or a second management course, depending on their concentration. In addition, they deepen their knowledge in economics and attend a course on law and governance in the second semester. They also participate in a practice-oriented project course that confronts students with the challenges of a real-world policy project.

Students complete a summer internship between their first and second years. Alternatively, they are offered the opportunity to gain even more substantial work experience during a professional year. The Hertie School has established relationships with a range of institutions.

In their third and fourth semesters, students choose two electives in their respective area of concentration to refine their quantitative analysis or management skills. At the same time, they complete four additional electives and apply the knowledge, concepts, and tools they have learned by writing a Master's thesis.

Study abroad unit(s)

The Hertie School is affiliated with the Global Public Policy Network (GPPN).

MPP students have the opportunity to apply for a dual degree programme with one of the following partners: London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), SIPA at Columbia University in New York, Bocconi University in Milan and Graduate School of Public Policy (GraSPP) at the University of Tokyo.

Dual degree students complete their second year of study at the partner institution and receive degrees from both institutions after successful completion of their study requirements. In addition, we have special dual degree programmes with Sciences Po and Syracuse University. Please check our website for more information: https://www.hertie-school.org/graduate-programmes/studyabroad/dual-degree/

Alternatively, one-semester exchange programmes are offered at more than 20 partner universities around the world.

Course objectives

Students attending the Hertie School are encouraged to think about their professional life from the outset of their studies. Our Career Services representatives engage in a dialogue with the students throughout the programme. Students are offered individual career coaching and receive job application training.

The MPP curriculum prepares students for a successful entrance to the job market at the intersection of the private, public, and civil society sectors. Hertie School graduates find that the educational experience gained at the School contributes greatly to their ability to deal with the daily challenges in the workplace.

MPP graduates become part of the Hertie School alumni network. Alumni are an excellent resource for current students, as they report about their professional life, contribute to the curriculum, or offer internship opportunities. The Hertie School community is a means of establishing important, lifelong connections, both social and professional.
