The Program is open to students with undergraduate majors in English, mathematics, social studies, and the sciences. MAT combines graduate level work in the teaching field with education courses and a two-semester internship under the direction of carefully selected and trained mentor teachers in Durham's public high schools.

The objectives of the Master of Arts in Teaching Program at Duke are to

  • Attract exceptionally well-qualified candidates with strong liberal arts backgrounds into the teaching profession;
  • Provide students further depth in the teaching discipline through graduate work in the field;
  • Impart to students the skills and professional knowledge needed to teach the subject to diverse students; and
  • Enable students to diagnose and solve problems of teaching and learning by teaching them the skills of reflection and analysis.

No two MAT candidates have identical programs. The course of study is highly individualized and reflects the student's interests, needs, and future teaching plans. Advising within the MAT Program is a two-tiered process. Primary advising on course selection is based on the student's background and interests, State Department of Public Instruction certification requirements, and recommendations of the professional societies to which the student aspires. Therefore the advising process is shared both by MAT program administrators, who are well versed in certification and professional society requirements, and by advisors within the graduate department, who are best qualified to discuss their departments’ offerings.
