Description

Students in the program examine how theories and concepts from fields such as technology and operations management, organizational behavior, organizational economics, and competitive strategy can be applied to and further developed for understanding health care organizations. Key research themes include:

  • Learning and process improvement
  • Organizational structure and performance in health care delivery
  • Managing R&D organizations
  • Managing teams in clinical and research settings
  • Information technology and the management of health care processes
Examples of recent and current doctoral thesis research include:
  • Process improvement in the management of clinical drug trials
  • Safety and organizational culture in hospitals
  • Learning and team performance in neonatal intensive care
  • Interorganizational learning teams in hospitals
  • The impact of information technology on the process of care delivery
  • Error management: how information about medical errors is used and processed

COURSEWORK
  • Health Policy Core Seminar (Health Policy 2000)
  • Microeconomic Theory (Econ 2020a/b; API 101A/102A; or API 109/110; HCP 272 may be taken in place of a second term course.
  • Perspectives on Research in Organizations (HBS 4008)
  • Design of Field Research Methods (HBS 4070)
  • Statistics course
  • Econometrics course
  • Epidemiology (HPSH EPI 500)
  • One course in two of the following areas: Political Analysis, Decision Sciences, Medical Sociology, Ethics or Economics
  • MBA course in General Management or Healthcare.

  • Transcripts for all college/university degrees and courses:
Self-reported transcripts are accepted for both DBA programsand PhD programs. Applicants must upload copies of his/her transcripts to the online application system. Hard copy transcripts will only be required if admitted to a program, prior to enrollment. GSAS no longer requires hard copy transcripts to be submitted for PhD Programs (Business Economics, Health Policy Management, and Organizational Behavior) at the application stage. Similarly, DBA programs only require electronic copies at the application stage.

  • Three letters of recommendation (at least one from an academic source). Recommendation letters must be submitted online through the online application system. Hard copy recommendation letters will not be accepted.

Funding

All incoming students, regardless of need and background, are awarded a fellowship which includes tuition, single-person health fees, and a living stipend ($39,600 for 2014-2015).

Although there is no formal commitment, it is expected that a similar level of financial aid will be awarded for up to five years. All financial aid awards are contingent upon a student's satisfactory academic progress.
