If you are planning on being an Elementary School Teacher or a Special Education Teacher, this is the emphasis for you! The Teaching and Learning Emphasis is designed to provide the required multiple-subject content preparation for students to be admitted to the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential for teaching kindergarten through 8th grade. The Teaching and Learning Option program requirements include all of the subject-matter content specified by the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing (CCTC). In order to be admitted to the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential Program, students must establish multiple-subject content proficiency by passing the Multiple Subject CSET examination as well as the CBESTexamination. More specific details about Liberal Studies Teaching & Learning Emphasis can be found in the 2013-2014 Catalog.

If you are planning on being a High School or Junior High/Middle School Teacher,  you are advised to seek a Bachelor’s Degree in the subject area you interested in teaching rather than pursue a Liberal Studies major. Students who are interested in teaching secondary school (grades 8-12) will need to obtain a Single-Subject Credential in the area in which they intend to teach. Single-Subject Teaching Credentials in English, Math, and Science are currently offered at CSUCI. In order to be admitted to a Single-Subject Credential program, students must document single-subject content preparation by either obtaining a bachelor's degree from a program that has been approved for a CCTC subject matter waiver or by passing the single-subject area test (CSET).

Program Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

Evaluate effectively oral or written communication for accuracy of content, logic of argument, and clarity of reasoning.

Demonstrate high levels of computer literacy, information literacy, and technological literacy.

Compare and contrast other cultures and their customs and societal issues that may arise

Demonstrate content area knowledge related to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing content standards for the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential.
