A PhD in Biomedical Engineering will take you three to five years and involves producing a PhD thesis based on original work. You may apply from a thesis-based master's programs in any health, engineering or physical science discipline.

  • Two, half-course equivalents in biomedical engineering (or other areas at the discretion of the supervisory committee)
  • Presentation of the thesis proposal at the departmental seminar
  • Successful completion of a written and oral comprehensive examination
  • Defence of PhD thesis

Requirements

  • Your application should be submitted through the Dalhousie online application system.
  • You may be accepted into the PhD program in Biomedical Engineering from an accredited master's program in the physical sciences, biological sciences or engineering. In such cases, all of the requirements for entry into the MASc program must be satisfied.  Additional courses may be required at the discretion of the School and depending on the nature of the research work to be undertaken.
  • Official academic transcripts. These are usually sent to us directly from the university. You can also include them with your application letter if they're sealed by the originating university.
  • Two letters of recommendations from references who can attest to your potential as a researcher. These should be submitted via the online application process. Your references will be emailed at the email addresses you provide within five business days after submission. Note that web mail addresses (Gmail, Hotmail, etc.), cannot be used for this process.
  • An application letter outlining your past research experience, research interests and/or a research project of the type you wish to pursue. The names of two or more potential thesis supervisors (see Our Faculty for faculty research interests) should be included in your letter. It's helpful to contact potential supervisors via email prior to applying to discuss possible projects and funding availability.
  • Results of the TOEFL if your mother tongue isn't English. A minimum score of 600 is required for a paper-based exam, 250 for a computer based exam, or 100 for an internet-based exam. Where TOEFL isn't available, the following tests will be accepted: MELAB (minimum score 90); and IELTS (minimum score 7.5).
