The Master of Applied Science (MAppSc) is a 180-point, coursework postgraduate degree. A candidate would normally be a graduate but the degree is also open to those with other relevant qualifications.

The MAppSc is designed for students who wish to pursue an interdisciplinary programme of study underpinned by science that delivers versatile skills relevant to multiple end-users. Optional paths are available that enphasize commercialisation, workplace-based projects or independent study.

The MAppSc can be completed in 12 months or in stages, providing flexibility for recent graduates and those currently employed.

The whole purpose of the Applied Science programme is to provide employer facing skills that will prepare you for an exciting career.

It may be a career that hasn't been devised yet - that's the nature of technology and scientific development at this time in history!

Key to selling yourself to prospective employers is being able to clearly articulate the skills you have. Our Graduate Attributes for the Applied Science degrees are the skills that we strive to bring out in you, skills that employers are seeking.

The Applied Science Graduate attributes are:

  • METHODOLOGICAL PROBLEM SOLVING: by applying logic; and acquiring, organising, retrieving, evaluating and presenting information; and the ability to work independently and adapt by acquiring new skills for seeking solutions to unmet needs.
  • INTERDISCIPLINARY CAPABILITY: understand at least two disciplines with the practical capacity to link between disciplines.
  • END-USER FOCUS: Understanding cultural diversity, ethical standards and social and personal responsibility and that the beneficiaries of applied science include: the graduate; consumers; employers; the people of New Zealand and the world.
  • NETWORKING: The ability to communicate and maintain diverse linkages and to lead and effectively operate within a team, to appreciate New Zealand’s contribution to the international environment.
  • EMPLOYABILITY: The attributes of interdisciplinary capability, methodological problem solving, end-user focus and networking—combined with self-confidence, personal responsibility and enterprise, with a commitment to adapt in a changing environment.
