Mobility and Urban Studies (Urban Design) (Aalborg)

The MSc programme Urban Design with a specialization in Mobilities & Urban Studies at Aalborg University, Denmark is interesting for students motivated to gain the technical skills associated with engineering as well as the theoretical based reflection of social science to understand, design or plan mobility in and around cities – thus to become a “reflecting technologist” as we like to call it.

Mobilities & Urban Studies at Aalborg University approaches mobilities as more than simply movement and it offers a new innovative and cross-disciplinary mobility-profession based on the new mobilities turn. Mobilities & Urban studies at Aalborg University integrates the diverse challenges that are related to an increasing physical mobility (traffic and transportation by car, plane or train alike), increased use of virtual mobility (mobile phones and smart transport systems), increasing social mobility (tourism and migration) and environmentally friendly and sustainable modes of transportation (e.g. bicycle cultures or bike lanes in Copenhagen).

The Mobilities & Urban Studies programme enables graduates to examine, integrate and design new solutions related to technological, environmental and urban planning challenges, as well as economic, organizational, political, and social strategies - all related to the field of mobilities.

The MSc programme in Mobilities & Urban Studies is a two years full-time study based on a combination of academic, mobile labs, problem-based learning (PBL) and interdisciplinary approaches based on a multitude of work and evaluation methods. Whether students plan to do research at universities or work in the private sector or public institutions, Mobilities & Urban Studies at Aalborg University offers a leading and international oriented academic education focused on mobilities - one of few in fact.

    Job and career

The social need for graduates with a cross-disciplinary mobility profile, such as the one acquired through the Master’s programme in Mobilities and Urban Studies, is mainly found within public administration and institutions as well as private organisations, consultancies and consulting engineering firms working within the field of mobility, transport and city life.

In the public sector, on state and municipal levels alike, there is a demand for mobility graduates with skills to analyse and plan for new ways to organise social mobilities that are moving towards resource optimisation, sustainable mobilities systems and a more equal distribution of mobilities resources. State administrations and municipalities, thus, present significant public employment opportunities within the mobility profession.

In the private sector, there is a great need for knowledge, proficiencies and competencies related to working out technological and strategic mobilities solutions that are able to satisfy the increasing demand for mobility within new resource restrictions. Moreover, private NGOs and other organisations (e.g. within tourism) also offer employment opportunities. Large private logistics, transportation and tourism businesses are other options for a mobility professional. Finally, consulting engineering firms and consultancies will also require graduates with a Master’s degree in Mobilities and Urban Studies

Mobilities & Urban Studies at Aalborg University combines such skills as sociology, engineering and teamwork. This combination gives the student great opportunity to influence the career path he/she wish to follow. Also if this path features the desire to do mobility research.

The Masters programme in Mobilities & Urban Studies at Aalborg University, Department of Architecture, Design & Media Technology is divided into four semesters running respectively from September to January and from February to June (January and June partly reserved for exams). Thus, students will typically complete the programme in 2 years. Each semester is subdivided into three or four course modules and one project module. All courses are conducted in English.

Students will work problem-orientated and are given options in the project modules as they can select among different projects and some courses within the general semester theme. Moreover, the Master Thesis on the 4th semester can be selected freely within the field of Mobilities and Urban Studies. In this way students can specialise due to their particular interests and develop their own academic profile related to mobility and urban questions along the educational semesters.

MSc 01 - Analysing Contemporary Mobilities

The first semester of Mobilities & Urban Studies offers a solid and innovative introduction to theory and methods concerning contemporary mobility and urban environments. The objective is to strengthen the student’s ability to understand and analyse specific cases of contemporary mobilities (e.g. transit spaces, everyday life mobility, virtual mobility and communication) in the light of the cross-disciplinary ‘mobilities turn’. The project aims at giving the student an opportunity to apply theories and methods with a particular focus on societal needs and challenges in relation to technological infrastructures.

    MSc 02 - Mobilities: Place & Culture

The second semester of Mobilities & Urban Studies addresses place theory and cultural theory in relation to mobilities, with the aim that students achieves an understanding of interrelations between place, culture and the mobilities perspective. The project module aims at giving the students the opportunity to develop a theoretical approach alongside their empirical investigations related to mobilities.

    MSc 03 - Sustainable Mobilities

The third semester of Mobilities & Urban Studies offers four possibilities: The possibility of internships in firms or organisations working with mobility; study at another university; writing a Long Masters Thesis; and a course-semester at Aalborg University. This course-semester with the theme “Sustainable Mobilities” addresses global mobilities issues from a sustainability perspective. Emphasis is on a broad definition of sustainability, i.e. its economic, social and ecological perspectives. Students will strengthen their ability to integrate in their work with mobilities a sustainability perspective including environmental mobilities, green technologies and environmental urbanism as well as social mobilities and sustainable migration.

MSc 04 – Masters Thesis in Mobilities & Urban Studies

The fourth semester of the MSc programme in Mobilities & Urban Studies is devoted for students to write their Masters Thesis in a mobility and urban related topic of their choosing.
