It complies with the guidelines of Lei de Bases do Ensino Superior (Portuguese laws which regulate the education system), combining the most relevant characteristics of FEUP´s most important courses in this area: Bachelor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

This Master Course comprises aspects of both of the above mentioned courses. From the first, it includes the aspects of a solid and broad scientific training in the fundamental areas of Electrical and Computer Engineering. It endows students with skills related to learning processes and underlying scientific knowledge. From the second, it includes the broaden knowledge that is given and the development of skills, which are mandatory at this level. This Master Course is based on a common program and then it is divided into three different major areas:

* Telecommunications, Electronics and Computers
* Automation
* Energy

In addition to a common area that they all share, they comprise specialization areas, namely: Industrial Management, Industrial Informatics, Industrial Electronics and Instrumentation, Robotics, Energy Networks and Markets, Electrical Installations, Microelectronics, Signal, Audio and Video Processing. They are constituted by course units that are optional.

The study plan also comprises minors, which are coherently organised in different areas of specialisation. They lead to a complementary training, which will be mentioned in students´ diploma.
