MBiotech is a 24 month, course-based professional degree incorporating both science and business courses with 8-12 months of work experience in the biotechnology, medical device and biopharmaceutical sectors.

The MBiotech Program is specifically tailored to meet the evolving needs of our students and those of the global health sciences industry. Our faculty is drawn from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Management. The program makes frequent use of guest lecturers from the biotechnology sector, including individuals from government, public and private companies, and members of other UofT faculties. The carefully selected combination of courses, coupled with relevant industry experience and a strong focus on teamwork, provides our graduates with a truly interdisciplinary educational experience at a world renowned university.

Our students come to the program with a strong work ethic, and learn to operate effectively in teams and develop their leadership skills. You also gain excellent opportunities to build your communications skills through frequent presentations to your class, and to the wider community. Innovative thinking and entrepreneurship are actively encouraged. When you graduate, a host of opportunities await.

Students are required to complete 9.0 graduate credits over a 24 month period:

8 Science courses (4.0 credits) (includes credits for seminar series)
4 Business courses (2.0 credits)
2 Work Term courses (2.0 credits)
1 Elective credit (can be another Work Term or graduate level science or business courses)

First Year

Commences in May

Summer Courses

Business course - Effective Management Practices and Biotechnology and Ventures. Students learn how to work in teams and gain organizational behaviour skills.
Science courses - Biomaterials and Protein Chemistry Theory. Runs in conjunction with the Biomaterials and Protein Chemistry Lab course.
Science lab courses - Molecular Biology lab; Biomaterials & Protein Chemistry Lab. Intensive all day lab based courses that teach common and current techniques in biotechnology.

Fall Courses

Science courses - Biotechnology in Medicine. This lecture course deals with academic, applied and business perspectives of biotechnology.
Business courses - Fundamentals of Managerial Concepts; Society, Organizations and Technology. These courses introduce some basic concepts in the area of accounting, finance and marketing as examine the economic and business environment in which the biotechnology industry operates.
Seminar course - (runs from September-December) Seminar in Bioscience/Biotechnology. Involves both guest speakers from companies, government or academia and student presentations in scientific and/or business-orientated issues related to biotechnology.

Spring Courses

Work Term - Students begin a four month (minimum) placement in industry or university-based biotechnology laboratory.
Seminar Course - (runs from January-April) Seminar in Bioscience/Biotechnology. Involves both guest speakers from companies, government or academia and student presentations in scientific and/or business-orientated issues related to biotechnology.
Science Course - Biotechnology in Agriculture & Natural Products. This lecture course deals with academic, applied and business perspectives of biotechnology.

Second Year

Summer Course

Work Term - Students continue initial placement or begin a new four month (minimum) placement.

Fall & Spring Courses

Seminar course - (runs from September-April). Seminar in Bioscience/Biotechnology.
Business course - Management of Technological Innovation.
Elective course(s) - Either a third four-month Work Term or two science and/or business graduate courses offered at U of T.

A four year bachelor's degree in any area of biological sciences, chemistry or related fields, with a minimum "mid-B" (75%) average or higher in the last two years of study.
Quick Fact: To be more competitive, applicants should note that GPAs higher than the minimum may be, and typically are, required. The average GPA of incoming students in recent years has been in the 85% range in the final two years of undergraduate studies.
Transcripts
As part of your electronic application, three letters of reference are required.
Through your electronic application, a one page statement describing your interest in Biotechnology and your interest in the Master of Biotechnology Program is required. Include a statement on the specific area of Biotechnology in which you are interested.
A current copy of your resume or CV is required and should be uploaded to your online application.
Short-listed candidates will be required to participate in an on-campus interview day in February 2017. Admission interviews will be determined based on academic and personal profiles including transcripts, three letters of reference, CV and your letter of intent. Skype interviews are typically offered to out-of-province and out-of-country applicants.
Students who have completed their studies outside Canada must submit scores for both a GRE Subject Test and English Proficiency scores (TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent).
