In an age where English is emerging as the common, global language for science, society and cultural exchange, English language skills are essential for participation in cultural and scientific debates.  The Bachelor of English provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of English language, with a focus on its practical, scientific and artistic aspects. Through engaging the field's dynamic intellectual tradition, students develop their capacity for critical reflection within a broader cultural perspective.   Our excellent lecturers have long educational and work experience from the UK and USA, and can offer students a programme with an internationally high standard, in both the linguistic and cultural components.  A Bachelor of English opens the doors to careers and further education for diverse range of occupations, both in Norway and abroad.

The first year consists of four courses worth 15 ECTS credits each. The courses are English Language for Bachelor of English, American Studies for Bachelor of English, and Research and Writing and British Studies for Bachelor of English.

The second year includes an Advanced Study of 20 ECTS (topics rotating annually), as well as other obligatory courses (20 ECTS) and the Bachelor Thesis (20 ECTS).

The third year is an elective year. Students may choose a relevant year-long study or individual courses as electives, totaling 60 ECTS. Popular choices at UiN include History or Norwegian, but this depends on the individual student's interests. It is possible to take English Advanced Study as a part of this elective year.

Many students choose to study abroad in an English-language country during this year, and we encourage them to do so. The faculty has a number of agreements with partner institutions, and a can offer a range of exciting options.

If the applicant does not fulfil the requirements for the Higher Education Entrance Qualification but has experience-based competence relevant to

the field of study, he or she may apply for recognition of this competence in order to fulfill the admission requirements.

For more information about the specific requirements for experience-based competencies, contact the study advisor for this programme.
