The institution was established in 1967 as the Queensland Institute of Technology (Darling Downs). In 1971, it became the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education, then the University College of Southern Queensland in 1990 and finally the University of Southern Queensland in 1992.

The institution gained full university status in 1992, becoming the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). The University has changed dramatically in many ways since then, including:

  • developing a significant research profile
  • expanding our postgraduate coursework programs
  • establishing significant branch campuses: Fraser Coast Campus in Hervey Bay on the central Queensland coast and the Springfield Campus in Brisbane's western corridor
  • expanding our ties with local communities, such as partnering to establish the Queensland College of Wine Tourism in Stanthorpe with the Department of Education and Training and Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE
  • further expanding international programs including developing relationships with major off-shore centres and a strong on-shore presence through the Sydney Education Centre.

The University of Southern Queensland is a body corporate established pursuant to the provisions of the University of Southern Queensland Act 1998.  The USQ Act provides for the University's governing body to make University Statutes and University Rules under a University statute.

The University does not have an ACN.  Its ABN is 40 234 732 081.

USQ's obligations under the Public Sector Ethics Act 1994 include the USQ Code of Conduct and access to Ethics Principles and Obligations for Public Officials.

Queensland Acts can be accessed via the Office of the Queensland Parliamentary Council legislation database and Commonwealth of Australia Acts via the Attorney-General's Department SCALEplus Law Resource.

  • Library.

USQ's Residential Colleges in Toowoomba offer a range of facilities which are available for private conferences and events during student vacation periods (late February, early April, end of June to mid July and middle of September – see Important Dates). Our facilities are able to cater for a variety of conferences, functions, meetings, lunches and sporting events ranging in size anywhere up to 2800 people.

USQ has a unique culture that focuses on support, flexibility and quality education. Here's five reasons why you should choose USQ:

1. We are number 1 in Queensland for graduates in full-time work*

USQ degree programs are career oriented. We provide practical work integrated learning opportunities to complement theoretical learning. We bridge the gap between university study and the workforce.

*(MyUniversity, 2013).

2.  You choose how you study

With three campuses available to study on-campus or online, as well as partner institutions all around the world, it’s easier than ever for study to fit in with your life, rather than the other way around.

3. You can study with support

Regardless of whether you study online or on-campus, our focus is to provide you with personalised support. That’s why every student has their very own Student Relationship Officer (SRO) who will be there to support you on your journey, help you through the challenging spots and celebrate your successes!

4. You don’t have to fit a student stereotype

Whether you are choosing your first career path, want to improve your current situation or are looking to broaden your horizons and study something you love, we’re ready to work alongside you to see your goals fulfilled.

5. You can get credit for your experience

We understand that people take different paths before studying at uni, so we recognise that you may have previous work and study experiences that may count towards your USQ degree allowing you to graduate earlier.
