About McGill University

McGill University is one of Canada's best-known institutions of higher learning and one of the leading universities in the world. With students coming to McGill from some 150 countries, our student body is the most internationally diverse of any research-intensive university in the country.  McGill was founded in 1821 thanks to a generous bequest by James McGill, and since then, we've grown from a small college to a bustling university with two campuses, 11 faculties, some 300 programs of study, and 40,000 students. The University also partners with four affiliated teaching hospitals to graduate over 1,000 health care professionals each year.

A Tradition of Success

McGill is recognized around the world for the excellence of its teaching and research programs. Ernest Rutherford's Nobel Prize-winning research on the nature of radioactivity was conducted at McGill, part of a long tradition of innovation on our campuses that includes the invention of the artificial blood cell and Plexiglas. Today our professors are building the new field of epigenetics, developing alternative energy sources from crop plants and driving human achievement in every field imaginable.  Our 250,000+ graduates form a vast global network, with many alumni reaching the top of their professions as Supreme Court Justices, award-winning authors and musicians, astronauts and more.

The Brightest Students

In addition to a stellar faculty, McGill is known for attracting the brightest students from across Canada, the United States, and around the world. McGill students have the highest average entering grades in Canada, and our commitment to fostering the very best has helped our students win more national and international awards on average than their peers at any other Canadian university. The prestigious Rhodes Scholarship has gone to a nation-leading 138 McGill students.

The ability to balance academic excellence with the extracurricular is another hallmark of the McGill student. In addition to a rich athletic tradition that includes many Olympians and the birth of hockey and football, thousands of McGill students participate in the hundreds of clubs, associations and community groups that enrich Montreal and contribute to a vibrant campus life.

  • Faculty of Law

    About the Faculty

McGill University’s Faculty of Law is one of the oldest such faculties in Canada, established 19 years before confederation, in 1848. Since its inception, it has remained at the vanguard of legal education and scholarship, both at home and abroad. Its alumni can count among its members Prime Ministers and Supreme Court Justices. It is located in the heart of downtown Montreal, on the slopes of Mount Royal, and adjacent to McGill University’s main campus.

This location, in the largest city in Québec, has had a dramatic impact on its legal program. McGill University graduates emerge with a degree that allows them to practice not only in the civil law systems in Québec, inherited from the French ancestry of the province, but also in the common law provinces that make up the remainder of the country.

In this, it can be said that the legal education is marked by a mutually sustaining relationship between the Western world’s two major legal traditions. The education recognizes that the law comes from a broad range of sources, and thus it is predicated on a study of law as an intellectual inquiry that is inherently “transsytemic.” Both legal systems are taught alongside topics in public law, in both French and English, from the very first days of the course of study. In this, McGill University’s Faculty of Law seeks to function as a pragmatic and scholarly response to the law in a changing world.

The History of the University

The oldest university in Montreal, McGill was founded in 1821 from a generous bequest by James McGill, a prominent Scottish merchant.

Eight years after it was officially established, "McGill College" began holding classes in conjunction with the Montreal Medical Institution.

Four years after classes began, McGill awarded its first degree – and Canada's first ever medical degree – to William Leslie Logie.  Logie was McGill's only graduate that year.

The college quickly outgrew James McGill's country home, and construction on the Arts Building began 10 years after its founding.  The Arts Building, with its cupola and flag pole, has become the signature of McGill's downtown campus, and one of Montreal's most recognizable landmarks.

McGill is a place of learning, but hard work needn’t come at the expense of hard play, and McGillians certainly exercise more than just their minds. A home to exceptional student teams and an alma mater to many star athletes and coaches, McGill has also played a key role in the creation of three pillars of sport.

Over the years, architects have proposed a variety of plans for McGill’s lower Downtown Campus, including an imposing tower on the Redpath Library. Here's a small selection of big ideas from McGill’s earliest days that never made it off the drawing board: the McGill that might have been.
