Luebeck University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule Lübeck), a university-like institution of applied sciences with its campus in the tradition-steeped town of Luebeck, is proud of its 180-year history. Founded in 1808, it was not until 1969 that the government of Schleswig-Holstein integrated three separate colleges, the College of Technology and Seafaring, the College of Construction and the College of Engineering, to form Luebeck University of Applied Sciences. Since 1973, it has constantly held a sound reputation as a technical college of higher education. Today, Luebeck University of Applied Sciences offers 26 study programmes. The focus, however, remains on technology, civil engineering, natural sciences, and economics. The courses on offer are highly topical and thus graduates are a perfect match for the demands of the job market. Skills in management, analytical thinking, languages and social competence in groups are intrinsic parts of these courses. From a wide variety of courses, students themselves are able to choose any courses of interest to them and thus deepen their knowledge. More information can be found at https://www.fh-luebeck.de/. The University of Luebeck offers degree programmes in medicine, computer science/engineering, and natural sciences. Interdisciplinary programmes encompassing natural sciences, computer science, and medicine offer practical and up-to-date education underpinned by the highest standard of healthcare. As a result of teamwork among faculties and collaboration with other universities in Luebeck, the Research Center Borstel, the Medical Laser Centre and local businesses, the conditions here are ideal for developing and applying innovative technologies, diagnostics and treatment. Teaming-up with national and international research institutes bolsters the quality of research at our university, currently defined by two special fields of research. Compared with other universities, the University of Luebeck is small, with just 3,000 students - but it boasts a good teacher-student ratio. The high standing of our computer science and medicine students underscores the high standard of our teaching and education.
The Hanseatic City of Luebeck with its three universities (College of Music, Luebeck University of Applied Sciences, and the University of Luebeck), offers a broad variety of courses ranging from medicine, natural sciences and technology to the study of music. Courses offered at the higher education institutions are the latest state of the art, and are of excellent quality. The ever-increasing number of students is an indication of the attractiveness of Luebeck as a place to study. Because of its proximity to the Baltic Sea, Luebeck offers a wide variety of cultural and sporting activities. Nearly 8,000 students in Luebeck appreciate the recreational opportunities on their doorstep. The historic Old Town of Luebeck (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987) with its many restaurants, cafés, cinemas, theatres, and possibilities for sporting activities on the Baltic Sea, is reason enough for many students to study here. To those for whom that is not enough, the metropolis of Hamburg is nearby. Luebeck's location on the Baltic Sea is also of international significance. Long-existing contacts with the Scandinavian countries expand cultural, economic, and scientific opportunities, and strengthen Luebeck as a site of higher education within the framework of indispensable international cooperation. Among students the Hanseatic City of Luebeck is considered a well-kept secret, since they can live and study here in easily accessible surroundings, in contrast to cities with "mass universities". The regional economy, with its connections to the universities, offers further good reasons to study in Luebeck. The close cooperation between the universities and companies in and around Luebeck is obvious in many ways. The availability of traineeships, the cooperative formulation and implementation of diploma theses, research projects and possible subsequent job offers make higher education in Luebeck extremely attractive. Companies in Luebeck seek and establish contacts with the universities.
As the programme involves a small group of students (approx. 30), extensive support is provided by faculty and staff. Two student tutors organise a series of social events and activities for all international students to make them feel at home quickly.
