Soil Management

Soil Management is a branch of management and organization which is dedicated to operations and treatments for protecting soil and using it (mostly in agriculture). Soil management includes such aspects as soil mechanics and soil fertility.

Soil Management includes the following topics:

Soil conservation

Soil conservation as a part of Soil Management is dedicated to protection of the soil from erosion or other loss of fertility - for example, soil fatigue, salinity, overmoistening or excessive chemical impact. The following methods are used in Soil Management for the conservation of soil: mineralization, planting of other plants or fungi, leaching of salt, planting of trees along the perimeter of field.

Soil amendment

Soil amendment (or soil conditioner) is adding special fertilizer in the ground for improving the fertility of the soils. It helps soils to provide nutrition for plants better and improves its mechanic qualities. The list of soil amendments include: lime, fertilizers for plant nutrients, materials for water retention, gypsum, clay.

Soil Health

Soil Health is the condition of soil  which characterizes the soil as part of a healthy and functioning ecosystem. Soil health is characterized by proper biodiversity, as well as resistance to various weather conditions (frosts, winds), and also supporting the  human health and habitation.

Soil management can be taught as a part of Environmental Resource Management or Soil Science degree. Many study programs in these areas can be found on our website. Use the Search button to find the best study program for you.
