Theatre Studies

Theatre studies, or dramatics, is one of the specializations of Performing Arts, which is dedicated to theatre performance and its variations. Usually History and Culture of theatre is taught as a part of study program in Theatre studies.

Program structure

Undergraduate degree in Theatre Studies is usually called BA (Bachelor of Arts), BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts), or rarely BPA (Bachelor of Performing Arts). An undergraduate study program can last from three to four years, it depends on the chosen university and specialisation.

The curriculum usually consists of such subjects as Theatre Research Methodologies, Theatrical Dramaturgy, Set Design, Light Design, Stagecraft, Musicals, Directing, Stage Voice.

Study program can be either focused of culturological and historical aspects of theatre as a phenomena, or be rather practical and prepare actors and theatre stuff. It affects the curriculum of the study programs, the value of practical lessons and internships.

Entry requirements

Applicants for Theatre studies usually need to pass an audition or an interview. Some universities allow international applicants to have a Skype-interview, but usually applicants’ presence is mandatory.

Audition usually includes several monologues or a poetry set.

Those who apply for a theoretical study program in Theatre studies do not have to pass the audition; they should have high grades in Arts and Humanities subjects.

English fluency is always required.
