Peadiatric Dietetics

Paediatric Dietetics is a specific section of Dietetics, aimed at studying the nutrition of infants and children, as well as selecting the right diet for them.

The main emphasis in children's dietetics is on the selection of a diet for children with any diseases - diabetes, allergies, cancer,  growth or development delays. Good nutrition (and the correct metabolism), as well as all the necessary vitamins help the child's organism to fight diseases.

Another issue of Paediatrics Dietetics  is breastfeeding and teaching babies to eat normal food. As is known, the duration of breastfeeding and its quality directly affects the further health of the child - his teeth and gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, breastfeeding mothers consult with specialists in the field of Paediatric Dietetics about how breastfeeding goes and when it's time to stop it.

Paediatrics Dietetics courses are usually provided as a part of common Nutrition and Dietetics study programs. It means that students wishing to be engaged in Paediatric Dietetics should apply for an undergraduate Nutrition and Dietetics study program and choose a specialization in Paediatrics during their education, and then engage in research projects and practices related to the nutrition of children. Usually Children Nutritionists should hold at least a Master’s degree in the relevant area to begin their career, some organizations welcome graduates with a Bachelor degree.

Many universities (for example, Monash University), offer additional online or on-campus courses for Nutrition and Dietetics, Healthcare or Public Health graduates. These courses aimed to train special specialists in nutrition of children.
