What is East European Studies?

As it understandable from the term, East European Studies is one of the specializations of Ethnic Studies, which deals with countries of East Europe - both outside and inside European Union. Commonly the emphasis is made in study  of Russia, Ukraine and Baltic states.

One of the important topics in East European Studies in political relationships between Russia and its neighbours. Attention is also paid to the postcommunist system and the way of thinking in the countries of the former USSR. Different study programs are focused on different areas of life in East Europe - Politics, Law, Culture, Art or History. Usually study programs in East European Studies include a language course of one of the countries of East Europe (it is most likely a Slavonic language). Departments of East European Studies in universities outside this region often collaborate with universities of East Europe, so students may visit one of the countries they are focusing at and spend a year or a semester in a university of this country. Internships in one of the countries of East Europe are rather common. Ethnic Studies, and East European Studies particularly, is a research-based discipline, so East European students need to propose a research project and present it by the end of their education.
