Career options for Astronomy graduates

Since Astronomy degree is rather specific, it is often chosen by those who wish to start a career on this particular area. Usually most of career paths in astronomy require a Masters or PhD degree, but sometimes graduates can start career after completing a Bachelor degree in Astronomy or combine further education with part-time job.

The most “mainstream” career path for graduates is Astronomer.  Astronomers work together with physicists and mathematicians. Their work consists in the study of outer space, its chemical and physical composition, the search for the principles of its existence, the discovery of regularities.

The main employers of astronomers are government and private observatories, educational institutions, government research organizations (for example, NASA). The duties of an astronomer depend on the organization in which he works. For example, astronomers working for museums and planetariums create exhibitions, and astronomers in NASA are only enrolled into research activity.

Astronomers can also be invited for a job in filming industry as scientific experts. Some astronomy graduates work as teachers in secondary schools.

Graduates holding a PhD degree in Astronomy can start teaching career in universities.

After completing an undergraduate degree in Economics, graduates can continue their education in a variety of related fields, for example, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics or Physics.
