Climate Studies, or Climatology, is a discipline which is dedicated to weather conditions on planet Earth and changing of them. Climatology is based on the constant observation and monitoring of regularities. The study of climate consists of various characteristics - temperature, wind speed and direction, amount of rain and snow, visibility range, solar radiation, evaporation of water and much more.
Climatology, as a science, solves a variety of problems in different branches of the national economy and, in particular, in civil engineering and architecture. Engineering Climate Studies is needed in order to take into account specific climatic conditions in the design, construction and operation of buildings. It is especially useful in rainy, windy or northern countries.
Entry requirements for Climate Studies applicants
Applicants for Climate Studies need to demonstrate their interest in Earth Sciences - A grades in Geography and Physics are mandatory requirement for almost all study programs in Earth Sciences. But many requirements depend on the chosen university. For example, many foreign universities ask applicants from Russia to complete at least a year of higher education in a university in the chosen study field, and then apply for a study program in a foreign university.
Volunteering in non-profit governmental institutions (and other relevant work experience) is not a mandatory requirement for undergraduate study programs in Climate Studies. It will show an applicant’s interest in the subject. A good motivational letter will carry out the same task.
Those applicants whose native tongue is other from English need to demonstrate language proficiency and pass IELTS, TOEFL or other equivalent language test.
Program structure
Undergraduate study program in Climate Studies usually lasts four years, graduates receive a Bachelor of Science degree. The curricula of study programs in Climate Science is rather diverse - it includes core courses in chemistry, oceanology and marine chemistry, biology, geography and geophysics. Last years of a study program are usually more specific - students choose their specialization and work for their research project, so they can choose courses which will be more relevant to their research project.
Study programs in Climate Science can also include practical lessons or internships on weather stations.
Many study programs in Climate Studies include a year abroad, which is also a great advantage for those who wish to combine their studies with travelling and seeing the world.
