Environmental Economics

Environmental Economics is one of the branches of Economics, which deals with economic aspects of the relations between environment and society. It mostly includes analysis of costs and benefits related to environmental activities - the introduction of waste-free production, new waste disposal, and other actions related to the reduction of pollution of water bodies, soil, atmosphere, and the impact on global warming.

One of the most important topics in Environmental Economics is market failure. This phenomenon occurs when the market does not cope with the implementation and allocation of resources. This causes irrational use of resources and harms not only the economy, but also the environment.

Entry requirements for Environmental Economics applicants

Those who wish to apply for one of the graduate study programs in Environmental Economics need to complete a relevant undergraduate degree in such disciplines as Economics, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Environmental System Analysis or other. High GPA scores are always required - minimum scores vary from institution to institution.

Since most study programs in  Environmental Economics which can be found on our website are taught in English, applicants are expected to demonstrate language proficiency. Those applicants whose native language is other from English need to submit the results of TOEFL, IELTS or other equivalent language certificate. Applicants who have completed a Bachelor degree in English usually do not need to submit language certificates.

Program structure

Usually Environmental Economics is taught as Master degree. Master study programs can last from one to two years - it depends of the chosen country and institution. Study programs are mostly rather specific - they include core courses in such disciplines as Econometrics, Natural Resource Economics, Applied Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, Economic Theory of Environmental Policy. The curriculum of Master study program consists of lectures, seminars, excursions, practical lessons and projects - either collaborative and personal. Students work on their own research projects during all education period and choose elective courses which are the most appropriate for their research and academic interests.
