What is Hydrology?

Hydrology is the study of water on Earth. Hydrologists explore movements of water, its composition and quality. Hydrology is deeply connected with Geography, Geology, Environmental Science and Engineering. It includes the following subdisciplines: hydrometeorology, hydrogeology, water management, surface hydrology, groundwater hydrology and marine hydrology.

Water Management is one of applied subdisciplines of  Hydrology. The aim of Water Management is controlling and developing using of water resources of planet Earth.

Why study Hydrology?

Hydrology and Water Management is an extremely important science field in the modern world. Nowadays humanity is confronted with global problems related to environmental pollution, including pollution of water resources. Hydrologists and  other scientists are engaged in solving the problem of pollution.

Hydrologists are also concerned with the lack of water in some regions of the Earth.

A degree in Hydrology and Water Management gives a strong background in the field of earth sciences, marine science and geography.

Admission requirements for undergraduate degree in Hydrology

There aren’t usually any specific requirements for undergraduate applicants who wish to study Hydrology or Water Management. Usually high GPA scores in Natural Sciences, such as Geography, are required.  Usually Hydrology is one of specializations of Environmental Sciences, so those who wish to study Hydrology, need to apply for Environmental Sciences program. Besides, MA or MS programs are usually more specific and dedicated to Hydrology or one of its subdisciplines.

If you wish to study Hydrology or Water Management in foreign country, you need to meet specific requirements of the chosen country. Some information about applying in several popular countries, for example, UK or USA, can be found on our website.

Hydrology Program Structure

An undergraduate study program in Hydrology (or in Environmental Sciences with specialization in Hydrology) usually lasts from three to four years, the length of the study depends on the chosen country and institution. The study program always includes a lot of fieldwork and practice.

A lot of universities provide scholarships for excellent students.

Career Options

Hydrology and Water Management is rather applied discipline, so graduates can find a perspective job after completing a Bachelor Degree, although some institutions require a Masters Degree.

A huge percent of Hydrology and Water Management graduates start a career path in government. They can also apply for a job in management or scientific consulting services, or work in engineering area.

A lot of Hydrology and Water Management graduates holding a Bachelor Degree choose continuing education. PhG graduates can start a research career or become a professor in a university or other education institutions.

Graduates holding a degree in Hydrology can continue their education in the following areas: Environmental Biology, Environmental Toxicology, Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Psychology, Geology, Geography and other related disciplines.
