Internship for biologists on whale work in Ecuador

Description

The internship is organised by the Pacific Whale Foundation in Ecuador. The aim of the program is the study of whales, the collection of data for analysis.

Every year since 1997, young biologists, scientists and all not indifferent to whales arrive to the coast of Ecuador in the city of Quito and go to Puerto Lopez to observe marine animals. The program is held from June to October only, when a warm current origins near Colombia and reaches the shores of Ecuador. During this period, whales come there to bood, and in October they go back to the cold waters of the Antarctic.

Since 1997, scientists have recorded about 2,200 different whales; their photos and other scientific information have been placed in the database. For example, program participants collect data to track whale migration and their feeding ranges. In addition to whales, dolphins and seabirds are observed.

The program starts every Saturday, so you can choose any duration within the established framework for the migration of whales: from 1 to 4 weeks.

Despite the apparent simplicity of the program, participants should be really responsible:

  • Do not be late, attend all the set hours and conscientiously engage in the assigned task;
  • Wear appropriate clothing;
  • do not use prohibited substances;
  • during personal trips or walks in your free time, monitor your condition in order to be alert and efficient the next day;
  • Do not have a romantic relationship with any of the team.

The tasks have a high scientific goal, which should be treated appropriately.

Approximate schedule for the program for 1 week:

Sat - collection and overnight at a student house in Quito.

Sun - transfer from the student house to the Quitumbe bus station, transfer to Puerto Lopez

Mon - the beginning of research on whales in the Pacific Ocean, data collection and analysis.

Tue - whale watching off the island of Isla de La Plata. Island snorkeling, landing and walk around the island.

Wed, Thu, Fri - whale watching in the ocean, data collection and analysis.

Sat - summarizing the study, conclusions. The end of the program.

You can attend Spanish classes on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for additional fee.
