At Dundee the course, which formalises the study and practice of digital film alongside time based art, offers you a near unique experience, including giving you access to one of the only green screen visual effects studios in Scotland. We also offer you state-of-the-art, high definition technologies for live action and visual effects.

At the end of the course you will be able to produce a significant body of works in one or more of the following:

Art & Media Programme

Time based art & digital film is one of three courses that comprise the art & media programme (art, philosophy, contemporary practices, fine art, time based art & digital film). This programme has an already established reputation as the only interdisciplinary arts curriculum in Scotland. The bringing together of three distinct pathways under the art and media programme offers a broad educational experience and access to a wide range of staff expertise, while also allowing you to gain deep knowledge and expertise in your chosen subject pathway of time based art & digital film.

Student exchange

The academic perspective is enhanced by opportunities for you to study abroad through exchange schemes that operate with centres of excellence in many European and transatlantic countries.

In addition, the department normally organises an overseas study visit for all Level 3 students.

Careers

New challenges and opportunities for creative artists, animators and illustrators exist in broadcasting, publishing, print media and advertising. There is a massive growth in areas such as communication design, multimedia, the web, computer games, 3D visualisation, virtual environments, digital film-making and visual effects. The creative industries are rapidly expanding providing relevant and exciting career opportunities for graduates, not only for now but for the foreseeable future. Graduates from Time Based Art & Digital Film have gone on to have successful careers as:

Ian Forbes graduated in 2010. He began his career in film immediately, with local production company Flyboy. Now, supported by a BAFTA scholarship, he is halfway through a Masters course in cinematography at the renowned National Film and Television School, Herts.

Emma Alexander and Jo Helford graduated in 2007. They founded "Tin Roof" a highly successful artists-run production studio complex, and have continued working successfully in community art and video. Jo has recently premiered her latest film work, developed with the young people of Nablus, Dundee's twin town in Palestine.

Ah-Bin Shim Shim obtained her BA in Time Based Art at DJCAD. She makes animations, bookworks and humorous physical objects which puncture our expectations of the digital and the physical. In 2005, she was a guest artist at the Sapporo artists in residency in Japan. She currently lives and works as a respected self-employed artist in Seoul, Korea.

Postgraduate study

Some graduates choose to continue their studies at postgraduate level on our taught Masters degree or PhD programmes.

Enterprise

Others have gone on to establishing their own successful businesses. Extra curriculum activities such as the Enterprise Gym help students cultivate entrepreneurial skills. The Greenhouse Business Pre-Incubator facility provides ambitious students with an office space to explore their business idea.

Course Content

How you will be taught

The programme of study initially involves projects and workshops designed to help you, through experiential learning, to understand the fundamental discipline of your chosen subject. Many different approaches to teaching and learning are used including:

What you will study Level 1

Students can enter Time Based Art & Digital Film after successfully completing our Art and Design (General Foundation) course (apply for course WW12) or on successful completion of a recognised Foundation Course or equivalent (apply for course W690).

Level 2

In Level 2 we will introduce you to a broad foundation of knowledge and experience. You will gain insight into photography, moving image, sound and interactivity. You will learn about the relevant equipment and varied media used in the production process for your choice of specialism.

Projects and assignments help you develop the relevant learning, research and technical skills, exploring creativity and individual aptitude through each process.

Level 3

Level 3 is designed to encourage experimentation, cross course projects, exploring ideas and making use of appropriate technical methods.

All students prepare and present a programme of personal project work that reflects the research and development of ideas. During this year you will undertake a series of assignments designed to develop good professional practice necessary to succeed in your chosen career.

  • Elective modules such as Materiality & Meaning, Contemporary Portrait, Printmaking etc
  • Optional one semester of exchange study at an international institution. These options can include NSCAD (Canada), Brno (Czech Republic) or Bologna (Italy).
Level 4

In your final year you will organise and present a personal programme of study that will form the major part of your submission for the Honours degree examination.

You will be encouraged to integrate all aspects of your research which a written thesis and the production of your final outcome. You will produce a body of work that will demonstrate a mature visual understanding of materials, methods and processes required to transform ideas into reality.

How you will be assessed

Your progress is monitored with structured formal reviews and assessments. At Level 4 a team of internal and external examiners conduct the final degree examination.
