Description

Amsterdam University College (AUC) offers a liberal arts and sciences programme, leading to a joint Bachelor (Honours) degree from the University of Amsterdam and VU University Amsterdam. A liberal education teaches you to read intelligently, think critically and write effectively. AUC students acquire not only depth of knowledge, but also important and transferable academic and research skills. You can major in the sciences, social sciences or humanities. All AUC students undertake community service or an internship, and AUC offers a wide range of study abroad opportunities. At AUC you will be trained to analyse complex issues from different perspectives and academic fields of knowledge. Discussions start from the ‘big questions’ in science and society and lead to in-depth study in a wide range of disciplines. Six interdisciplinary themes provide an orientation to the choice of courses for your major:

  • Energy, Climate and Sustainability
  • Life, Evolution and the Universe
  • Health and Well-being
  • Information, Communication, Cognition
  • Social Systems
  • Cities and Cultures

You will engage on a daily basis in intensive and small-scale seminars with high calibre international staff. An AUC tutor (academic adviser) supports you in the process of planning your study programme, to help you ensure it is solid and coherent and will meet your academic and/or career goals. Substantial emphasis is placed on scientific reasoning within an interdisciplinary approach.

Student community

As a member of the AUC student community you will belong to a vibrant international group of young people interested in studying real-world problems that cross the boundaries of academic disciplines. Through working in a diverse environment of different languages and cultures, you will develop your creativity and critical thinking, and your problem-solving and communication skills. You need to be driven by a strong motivation to learn and a great commitment to the diversity of the AUC student community. From this foundation, you want to contribute to important debates about the world and its future, and to make a difference!

Campus

Your time at AUC will become a true intercultural and social learning experience. AUC students live and study together on our modern international campus, located in the Science Park Amsterdam. The Science Park’s concentration of education, research exploration and enterprise is the perfect academic environment for AUC, as well as being the location of the University of Amsterdam’s sports centre and other sport and social facilities.

Admission

As a residential and selective honours college, AUC attracts students from all over the world. Applicants are assessed on the basis of their academic performance, interests and motivation, and the selectivity rate is around 20%. The AUC Scholarship Fund promotes diversity in the student body with generous support from the international business community.

Some key data

  • AUC’s student population: 50% international from more than 50 different countries. More than 30% of students study abroad for one semester. Around 10–15% of AUC students receive a full or partial scholarship from the AUC Scholarship Fund
  • AUC’s faculty: approximately two-thirds has an international background
  • Focus on science: AUC enrols up to 50% science majors and is located at Science Park Amsterdam
  • Study success: AUC’s retention and completion rates are among the top of Dutch university programmes. Study progress and performance is also far above the national average.

The most current data are published on the AUC website. The joint Bachelor degree programme offered by AUC is accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) and has been awarded the “Distinctive feature of small-scale and intensive education”. AUC’s foundation was supported by financial grants for Excellence in Higher Education from the Ministry of Education.

Course Content

AUC's study programme is structured around three years of study, covering six semesters (totalling 180 European credit points). Each semester will be 20 weeks long, divided into three periods: 8 weeks + 8 weeks + 4 weeks.

You will usually take five courses per semester of 6 credit points each. This will translate into a total study workload of around 42 hours per week (16 hours of class plus 26 hours of self-study).

The curriculum structure (download below) shows the general structure in more detail, per semester and per year. You start at the bottom: each row is a semester while each block represents a single course of 6 credit points.

You design your own study programme, with advice from your tutor, gradually filling in this structure with your chosen courses. Of course, the details of your programme might differ from this diagram (you might take more than one disciplinary course in a semester, for example, and then take no disciplinary courses in the next), but it shows the general pattern.

English Language Requirements

IELTS band : 7 CAE score : 80(Grade A) TOEFL iBT® test : 100

To study at this university, you have to speak English. We advice you to

take an IELTS test.

Requirements

In order to be eligible for admission to AUC, you will need to meet the following minimum requirements (follow the links for more details):

  • a secondary school diploma equivalent to the Dutch VWO
  • very good written and spoken English
  • good mathematics skills

In addition, the AUC Admissions Committee looks for students with the following characteristics:

  • academic excellence: you must demonstrate your ability to meet the academic demands of the AUC programme
  • motivation and ambition to study an intensive and broad programme
  • commitment to contribute to AUC's international student and campus life

AUC students have on average a secondary school GPA of >= 3.0 (>=7.5 in the Dutch system, >= 5 for IB, >= 10 for Abitur).

If you do not (yet) meet the admission requirements, then any offer of a place at AUC will be on a conditional basis. The conditions will be specified in the letter offering you a place. You will have to meet those conditions before you can be admitted.

AUC is a selective programme with a limited number of places, and we prioritise prospective students who have not previously completed a Bachelor degree. If you already have (or are about to complete) a Bachelor degree, you can still apply to AUC, but your chances of selection will be low.

English proficiency requirements

It is essential that you enter AUC with very good written and spoken English. English is the language of interaction at AUC, and you will be expected to do all of your studying in English and to be able to write in English at an academic level. You must meet our English proficiency requirements before you start your studies at AUC, so that we know you will be able to follow the programme successfully from the very first day of class.

You can apply to AUC while you are still working on improving your English, or before you have got your test result or final grade. If you are offered a place at AUC it will be on condition that you meet the requirements before your intended starting date.

Meeting the requirements

You will meet our English proficiency requirements if you are in one of the following categories:

  • You are an English native speaker who has been educated in English (from, for example, UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand and educated in one of these countries).
  • Your diploma that qualifies you to enter higher education was completely taught in English (please note this does not include the European Baccalaureate or French OIB (British or American version).
  • You have taken/are taking the Dutch VWO diploma and achieved/will achieve a final (rounded) grade of 8 or higher in English.
  • You have a recent TOEFL score (internet-based) of 100 or higher.
  • You have a recent IELTS score of at least 7.0 overall (with at least 7 in each of the four components).
  • You have a Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) at grade A.
  • You have a Cambridge Certificate for Proficiency in English (CPE) at grade C or higher.

For a September start at AUC, you need to send us the proof you meet the requirements by 15 July at the latest.

If you need to take a separate test, such as TOEFL or IELTS, you must make your own arrangements and pay any fee required. It takes some time for the results to be published, so make sure you book a test date well in advance of your intended starting date at AUC. Allow enough time for the results to reach AUC, for you to retake the test if the results are disappointing, and for those new results to reach AUC, all before your intended starting date.

For TOEFL, the institutional code for AUC is 5209.

Work Experience

No work experience is required.
