Description

People working in the field of disaster management apply their expertise in the form of proactive management of disasters and planned risk reduction interventions.
You will learn about all aspects of the disaster cycle and key management principles of planning, organising, co- ordinating and leading so that you can take on the role of a disaster management professional.
If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • A wealth of experience. Coventry was the first UK University to offer courses in disaster management;
  • the opportunity to undertake site visits and field courses to a range of UK and international destinations;
  • experienced teaching staff who bring their professional and research expertise into their teaching;
  • the chance to undertake a year of professional training with, for example, a national agency or international relief and development organisation;
  • training exercises to develop your skills in responding to disasters in a ‘live’ situation. You will be able to participate in a range of ‘table-top’ disaster response simulations and realistic scenarios which employ a range of digital media in virtual environments;
  • the opportunity to study a variety of topics including: water, sanitation and public health engineering solutions, humanitarian aid and relief systems and shelter and construction;
  • excellent employment prospects. 94% of our graduates from the Department of Geography, Environment and Disaster Management find employment (or postgraduate level study opportunities) within 6 months of graduation*. Recent graduates have gone on to work with RedR UK, Oxfam GB, Halcrow Group Ltd, the Catholic Overseas Development Agency (CAFOD) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Course Content

You will start by developing an understanding of the causes of disasters and their impacts through the analysis of case studies.

In the second year you will form a deeper understanding of how factors such as poverty, environmental degradation, poor infrastructure networks and politics influence vulnerability and how vulnerability can be assessed. In addition, you will develop practical skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), project management and field operations and logistics.

In the final year you will assess a range of risk reduction interventions, investigate how disaster and risk management can be mainstreamed into public policy and take a systems approach to analysing disasters and crises. You will also have the opportunity to carry out an independent piece of research in your project.

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars and practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.
