Description

Software development roles are now the fastest growing area in the IT sector and there is an increasing demand from businesses for employable and productive graduates to fill them. Computing is fundamentally changing the way we live, work, learn, talk and play. You can be part of this.

GCU is the first University in Scotland to offer the e-skills endorsed BSc (Hons) Software Development for Business programme. The programme provides students with the knowledge and skills for a career as a Computing Professional.
The BSc (Hons) Software Development for Business programme has been developed in co-operation with leading UK employers and e-skills, the Sector Skills Council for Business and Information Technology, in order to ensure that graduates have the skills that are needed by the computing industry. The programme is supported by employers such as BT, Capgemini, CA Technologies, Cisco Systems, IBM, Logica, Ministry of Justice and NHS.
Students start by studying the foundations of computer systems and software development, followed by learning how to model problems, design solutions and work with technologies including web, object-oriented programming languages, databases and operating systems.
In later years students develop expertise in software engineering. Topics studied include: the web platform, software design patterns, software security, software architecture, IT project management and professional issues. Students will be able to gradually specialise in areas they are interested in, including mobile development, cloud development, and big data.

Students will benefit from direct employer involvement in the form of guest lectures, networking opportunities and career mentoring. The e-skills community on-line networking service is also available for interaction with industry experts and fellow students throughout the UK. The new BSc (Hons) Software Development for Business degree will sit alongside the already successful IT Management for Business (ITMB) degree which has been running for many years.
