Description

This course allows you to engage directly with companies in the event industry, allowing you to take your academic theory straight into the practical arena. To help you to become a successful event manager, we develop your skills in research, reasoned argument, decision-making, communication, teamwork and leadership.

  • Links with the event industry via the department’s extensive contacts in the field, opportunities in the past have included associations with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Ltd. (LOCOG) and the National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham and National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham;
  • Experienced teaching staff who bring professional or research expertise into their teaching;
  • Practical experience of working on event management projects through the department’s own commercial event company which is embedded in the department, and allows you to progress through each stage of an event, covering aspects such as the bidding process, design, costing, logistics, implementation and feedback with the client;
  • Field visits and volunteer opportunities within the event industry that build your CV and let you apply your management theory;
  • The opportunity to participate in international workshops and conferences. For example, our students have participated in workshops focusing on sport events at universities in Groningen and Cologne;
  • Working in collaboration with Coventry University’s Students’ Union providing a range of events for clubs and societies, as well as being actively involved with the organisation and delivery of a number of key university events;
  • Coventry Business School is currently a member of European Foundation of Management Development (EFMD) and the Association of UK Business Schools (ABS).

Course Content

Throughout this course you will learn the principles and frameworks related to management from an event perspective and you will also learn how to apply theory, analyse complex problems, construct arguments and form reasoned conclusions.

You will cover the following core course themes: management, strategy, finance, event marketing, entertainment industry practice, project management and venue operations management, economic impacts of events and international event management.
You will also learn how this translates into practice on industry placements and voluntary projects throughout the course.

Your course will be based on a series of lectures and smaller seminars or workshops. Seminars and workshops are interactive and may involve hypothetical problem questions, case studies and the analysis of more theoretical issues. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

Funding

Merit Scholarship Scheme

Merit Scholarship scheme: £1,000, in year one only and based on academic performance.

  • Available to all international students applying for full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Coventry University.
  • Scholarships are allocated on the basis of academic merit. (Postgraduate applicants must hold 2.1 or equivalent, undergraduate applicants must hold A-levels or equivalent at grades BBC)
  • There is no separate scholarship application process: all undergraduate applications from self-funded international students from any non-EU country and postgraduate applications from international, will automatically be considered for a merit award. You will not have to do anything, if you are successful you will be notified in due course by the International Office.
University Research Studentship Scheme

Occasionally, funding becomes available to enable the University, either centrally, through one of the faculties or from other sources, to offer research studentships in specified topics or fields of study.

Science Without Borders

Ferguson Trust Scholarships

Ferguson Trust Scholarships are made available through the generosity of The Allan & Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust. The Trust was set up in memory of two generations of the Ferguson family to promote education, international friendship and understanding, and the promotion of world peace and development. The Trust supports people from low-income and conflict-affected regions who want to improve their knowledge of peace and reconciliation.
