Description

Marketing permeates every aspect of a well run business. It involves many different aspects such as advertising, sales, market research and new product development to create, promote and protect the company brand. Through understanding its customers and their needs anddesires, a company can make itself, its goods or its services irresistible to consumers.

This programme equips you for a career as a marketing professional. You will gain a good balance of theory and practice and will have the opportunity to apply your skills to real world marketing situations. In addition to the central subject of marketing, students will study a range of complementary business modules which are common to most students in the Glasgow School for Business and Society.

Your studies will include a variety of creative, practical applications of marketing, market research and consumer behavioural knowledge, giving you invaluable experience of the creative team based nature of the world of marketing. Throughout the programme, you will have the opportunity to select modules to complement your studies from a variety of related areas such as psychology, European languages, sociology and retailing related subjects.

Assessment Methods

Our approach to the learning, teaching and assessment of our students is tailored to the needs of marketing and so we adopt a wide range of learning and teaching methods to ensure not only that our students will gain the necessary knowledge and understanding of the world of marketing, but also develop their intellectual and personal skills.
Our programme is designed to enhance the employability and professional competence of our graduates in the skills and attributes demanded by employers in a global economy and provide them with the knowledge, skills and attributes which allow them to be flexible, independent lifelong learners.
Our assignments are designed to encourage the development and application of skills such as evaluation, analysis, and judgement within a marketing context. For example, our Level Three students undertake the E-Marketing module, where after learning the theory and practice of internet marketing, they are required to act as ‘internet marketing consultants’. They appraise the current internet marketing capabilities of a chosen organisation and make recommendations as to how online marketing could be improved.

Teaching Methods

Throughout the programme our students have opportunities to engage in ‘real life’ issues through live industry projects, case studies and investigations which put into practice the theories learned.
Our students have the opportunity to undertake structured work experience, becoming involved in ‘real-time’ marketing projects for external companies and other organisations. In recent years, our students have successfully completed projects in industries as diverse as telecommunications, tourism/heritage, and whisky.
Our lecturers have good links with senior marketing professionals, some of whom are former students, working in areas such as brand management, marketing consultancy, advertising and public relations. These contacts are regularly invited to give guest lectures and master classes.
