In terms of the main areas of IT infrastructure support, it centres on the (Specification, Design, Deployment, Management and Security of) Network Infrastructure and Client-Server system components required to meet business and organisational needs.
You will focus upon the skills necessary for the design, deployment and support of such infrastructures as they form the backbone upon which organisational computer systems depend.

  • Year 2: Designing Secure Networks, Digital Forensics Essentials & Incident Response, Integrated Design Project 2, Operating Systems & Security, Routing Fundamentals, Software Development for Engineers
  • Year 3: Advanced Routing, Scalable Campus Networking, Data Communications and Transmission Systems, Enterprise Systems Engineering, Quantitative Modelling and Cryptography, Integrated Design Project 3
  • Year 4: Honours Research and Project Methods, Honours Project, Simulating Multimedia Networks, Pervasive Grids & Services, Professionalism in Practice, Network Troubleshooting, Optimising Converged Networks and QoS

Work Placement

The programme features an optional one-year sandwich placement which can be undertaken after completion of Year 3. The placement consists of a year of practical paid work experience in a suitable company position. The different types of posts undertaken can be of quite a diverse range but will always relate to your area of study. Recently students have been placed with companies such as IBM, Dell Corporation, National Australia Group, The
Royal Bank of Scotland, Strathclyde Police among others. Undertaking the placement can provide valuable experience to enhance your career prospects following your graduation.

Direct Entry Year 2:

15 credit HNC Computer Networking or Computing. HNC must include an A in the graded unit and appropriate Mathematics unit. Other relevant computing HNC programmes may be considered - please contact Admissions Office for further detail.

Direct Entry Year 3:

HND Computer Networking & Internet Technology or Computing: Technical Support. HND must include an A in the graded unit, Routing Technology and appropriate Mathematics unit. Other relevant computing HND programmes may be considered - please contact Admissions Office for further detail.
