Through this course you will gain expertise and understanding of all the areas relevant to modern computing. Areas covered on this course include internet technologies, usability, systems software, entertainment and artificial intelligence.

You will be prepared for your future career through personal development and group working, as modern software product design is always done as part of a team.

Strong industry links and an optional work placement will enhance your employment prospects. We strongly encourage students to take a work placement, as it is invaluable in helping to make an informed decision about your future career pathway. Students are supported throughout the placement experience, and are assisted in finding a placement, as well as given advice and techniques on how to perform well at interviews. This course has well-established links with industry, meaning that a number of companies repeatedly take BSc (Hons) Computing students for the placement year. Past placements have taken place both in the UK and abroad in a number of companies including; IBM, Barclays Bank, Lockheed Martin, Sun Microsystems, United Advertising, Hewlett-Packard and British Aerospace.

Practical experience combined with theoretical knowledge means that graduates from this course will be highly sought after in a number of areas. These include software design and development, networking, technical consultancy, database management and systems analysis.

This course forms part of the Bournemouth University Computing Framework of courses, allowing you to change your choice of course within the Framework to best suit your needs.

The richness of careers in the IT industry means that students are not always clear about which area they wish to specialise in before they join us. Some do not decide until they reach the final year. With this in mind, we have designed this Framework to have a common first year and a second year which is largely common. This design gives you exposure to a variety of modern technologies and techniques, before you make your final decision. The first two years cover those areas we know to be foundational for all professionals in this field, in addition year two enables a measure of specialism. In the final year, you have the opportunity to specialise further or to keep your education broader and more general.
