Description

Construction managers are based both on site and in the office and are expected to work with a wide range of people from architects to construction workers.

The Construction Management programme covers a wide variety of technical, financial and planning aspects in theory and in practice, using both traditional and online teaching methods.

A feature of the course is hearing from industry experts in guest lectures. You will also spend six months on a work placement in Year 3.

There are opportunities to study in other European countries under the Erasmus Programme and as far afield as Australia and the USA as part of the Overseas Exchange Programme.

The programme is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Many Construction Management graduates have gone on to work for a number of highly renowned companies including MACE and Ogilvie Construction who have been impressed by the practical expertise and mature outlook of our students.

There are many career paths to follow: construction manager, site manager, planner, project estimator, facilities manager and building control surveyor, to name but a few.

The International buisnessman and GCU graduate, Khalid Abdul Rahim, has provided scholarships to enable selected built and natural environment students to undertake study tours, internships and cultural elements related to the Middle East.

Exchange: Study exchange opportunities exist with partner institutions overseas.

Assessment: Various assessment methods are used, including written coursework, unseen examinations and time-constrained tests.

Assessment Methods

A unique element of our course, which is mainly assessed through our students’ coursework, is the Construction Engineering and Structures module, a practical four day insert undertaken at the National Construction College Scotland.

As well as industrial site visits as part of their construction technology modules, our students also have the opportunity to take part in a European study tour, which in 2012 involved our students going to Barcelona.

Teaching Methods

Between the end of Level Two and the beginning of Level Three, our students have the chance to undertake a seven month work placement programme. Many of our students who do so find employment in these organisations when they finish their programme of study with us. Our students are prepared for a role in ‘setting out’ through the use of some surveying based equipment.
We have strong links with industry and keep our course relevant to industry’s requirements, by inviting guests and former students to lecture our current cohort. We also have strong links with professional bodies who illustrate to our students the value and recognition achieved by becoming chartered.
