Description

UCAS Code: G100

The University of Dundee offers lively and modern programmes of study centred on the application of mathematics, presented in a stimulating environment, by experts in the field.

Our mathematics degree is an 'applied mathematics' degree; you will learn to solve mathematical problems at the cutting edge of our understanding of the world around us.

We believe that undergraduates are best served by studying in a Division that is active in research to the highest level, and we are fortunate in having an excellent international reputation for our research work. Our courses are taught by those who have great enthusiasm for their subject, a dedication to it, and an appreciation of the needs of students.

Course Content

Level 1

At Level 1, one third of your time is devoted to Mathematics, one third to a joint subject (if applicable) and one third to another subject of your choice.

The Mathematics modules cover calculus, algebra, geometry and trigonometry. They will provide you with an introduction to university mathematics, following on from material that you will have studied at school.

Level 2

At Level 2, students taking a degree fully within Mathematics spend one half (and preferably two thirds) of their time is devoted to Mathematics, joint honours students again split one third Mathematics, one third to a joint subject and one third to another subject of their choice.

Two Level 2 modules extend topics in calculus and linear algebra covered at Level 1. Another pair of Mathematics modules at Level 2 will give you an introduction to Statistics and Discrete Mathematics and, optionally, Mechanics.

Level 3

On entry to Level 3, you will have the choice of following either a degree programme entirely within Mathematics or a joint Honours degree programme.

Students study a total of either modules, for a degree wholly within Mathematics, all eight modules are taken, for a joint Honours degree with Mathematics, four modules are chosen, of which the first two named below are compulsory:

- Mathematical Methods

- Differential Equations

- Analysis

- Complex Analysis

- Differential Geometry

- Fundamentals of Scientific Computing

- Graph Theory

- Operational Research

Level 4

At Level 4 you enrol for six modules in areas that relate to our research strengths. There is also an additional project work module, which includes training in personal transferable skills, a selection of mini-projects and one extended project.

Joint Honours students take either four of the six modules or the Honours Project and two of the six modules:

- Mathematical Biology I

- Mathematical Biology II

- Mathematics of Fluids and Plasmas I: Fluid Dynamics

- Mathematics of Fluids and Plasmas II: Magnetohydrodynamics

- Ordinary Differential Equations and their Approximation

- Partial Differential Equations and their Approximation
